"Classic video game maker Atari filed for bankruptcy late Sunday night in an attempt to break away from its financially troubled French parent company.
According to a press release from Atari, its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing is a move to distance itself from Atari S.A., formerly called Infogrames, which it has been affiliated with since 2003. Atari seeks to find a new buyer for its classic video game franchises, including Pong, Breakout, and Centipede, and its logo, one of the most recognizable video game logos to consumers.
Atari has recently switched its focus into the mobile space, releasing remakes and collections of its franchises on iOS and Android. "

(29,414 posts)I would have been 18 when it came out. Even so, I preferred playing the similar game, not by Atari, called Space Wars!

(30 posts)The first really good space game, in that you have to maneuver the way an actual spacecraft wood. I have the 3D version on my droid phone; it ROCKS! Hopefull they continue with their plans to expand the mobile games market and develop exact replicas of their arcade classics for mobile. I've been looking for those...
I hope they manage to hang on somehow. It's amazing they've lasted this long.

I first encountered an Atari 2600 in 1977, at age seven, and didn't understand what was happening. Eventually I caught on, although I was never any good at most of the games. I'm still no good at any reflex test sort of game, being slow and clumsy and prone to losing my temper when the thingus blows up my whatsis.
My favorite game was (and remains) Adventure. It's a bit of an obsession. I've ended up programming three versions of it over the years, for the PC. Everyone seems to think I'm a bit daft to obsess over a game they find boring and visually far too simplistic, but the game play is engaging and fascinating to me. A plus is that I can program my own version to be easy enough for me to actually win now and then.
I actually bought one of those Flashback consoles last week. Guess my purchase wasn't enough to help them.
