An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 struck off the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

A tsunami warning was issued for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati, and Wallis and Futuna, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. A tsunami watch stretched farther.
