"Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes." - Walt WhitmanYou may have noticed an edge of irritability, or even outright hostility, in some recent posts of mine. This is the product of a compounding of issues that all boil down, for me, to a simple and unfortunate truth: I am incapable of functioning without at least a fragment of joy in my life, and that apparently stands me at odds with a great many people whom I would otherwise call allies.
Far too many of those who populate this and other forums seem to function in an absolute void of joy. There is nothing that cannot be torn down, knocked over, insulted, denigrated, criticized, or pruned of even a single molecule of goodness or pleasure. Everything must come with its pound of flesh duly taken, weighed, and judged.
For a very, very long time, I was very, very angry every moment of every day. I am still angry for large swaths of the calendar, but have managed to carve out a small space where I can simply enjoy something without calling down the fires of Hell and damnation. This is a world where it is virtually impossible to avoid being a hypocrite...a fact I wish to underscore to the Most High And Righteous among us, who ply their woe on computers made from components dug from mines in African war zones, which are then shipped upon disposal to Chinese landfills and burned, creating toxic smoke and water pollution that cause horrific birth defects in the children who live nearby.
This is fact, so ye purists among us, heal thyself.
I saw and enjoyed the Paul Harvey "Farmer" ad during the Super Bowl. Is it contradictory to enjoy an ad about farming in a world run by Monsanto? Sure, but I am going to do it anyway, because I will have a small space in my life for simple joy no matter how much it rankles your sense of nobility. I will be contradictory, because I am vast, and contain multitudes...and I strongly suggest you figure out a way to do the same, or you will wind up with an ulcer the size of a car battery, muttering to yourself in a corner and utterly useless to the world you seek to save.
As always, if my demand to find some joy in my daily life puts your nobility in peril, feel free to deploy the Ignore function at your pleasure. Otherwise, know this: I will not be judged by those who make judgment their sole purpose for existing. It is, above all else, bottomlessly boring, and serves nothing other than the ego of the self-appointed judge.
Have a nice day.

(20,600 posts)but I think that is also a sign of caring and idealism. I bet many of these duers are personally comfortable in their financial and living situations, but they care enough to know that there are many others who are struggling and so they focus on that, which is in one way a focus on the negative but in another a sign of compassion and empathy for their fellow man. That said, yea, there also those who seem relentlessly negative to the point of humorlessness.

It seems any issue will be argued on the extremes, and god help anyone who disagrees with either side - they're trolls, they're puritans, they're newbies who are here to disrupt. Or maybe they're long-term infiltrators.

(90,714 posts)I have managed at last to carve out a few hours of joy each Friday, when I pick up my grandson after school and keep him overnight. I read and read and read to him. In the past couple of weeks it's been the Just So Stories, and I actually felt myself channelling Mehitabel the Cat when reading The Cat Who Walked by Himself, which was a remarkable experience.
I was angry at Bush et al. for 8 solid years, and it is hard to climb out of that hole. Too much dust and ashes in the mouth ends up choking a person. That bunch is not worth giving up my life for.
Nor is it worth giving up the time I have left on this Earth living in constant anger over the shortcomings of .... well, everything. As a depressive, it's already hard enough to carve out that small space just once a week.
Good post, Will.

I like Will Pitt! But, jeez, don't tell me he's not telling people off there. Come on.
WilliamPitt
(58,179 posts)I am telling people off...but not people who had a problem with the farmer ad. I used the ad only as an example, but could have used a dozen more. Post about my daughter-to-be turns into a long avalanche of darkness about overpopulation and the idea that bringing children into the world is an act of supreme selfishness. Post about my dinner turns into ten verses and a chorus on how the food I've chosen to eat is an indictment of my character. I chose to make an example of the farmer ad. Of course it had vivid anti-labor overtones. And there was an unavoidable racial angle. And it was a fantasy about a life that is being driven out of existence by massive agribusinesses. And those trucks are pollutive as hell. And Paul Harvey was a right-wing mouthpiece.
See, I can know all that - every last inch of it - and still enjoy the artistry and photography of the ad, and feel as well a nostalgic twinge when I remember the sound of Harvey's voice filling the sun-soaked kitchen of my childhood as his little five-minute "Rest of the Story" vignettes came from the radio tuned to WBZ in Boston.
That's the fragment of joy I mean. I can hold both in my mind and heart at the same time...and again, the ad is just an example. The people I am telling off are not just those who went postal over the ad; of course not. The people I am telling off are the ones who peddle darkness, glumness, doom, shame and recrimination with every living breath.
Cheers, Hissyspit.

(21,794 posts)After Granny D admonishes those (too many of us here at DU) about always judging and applying "precious political standards" to all candidates and officials, she ends her speech with the following observation:
(snip)
This is great work. Did you, as a child, hope that one day it would be in your hands to save the world? Then rejoice. Is it not indeed joyful to find yourself embarking on a life of great meaning? Yes, that is the great peace march smile we saw on the streets of New York and Washington and San Francisco and a thousand other cities and towns, is it not? Aren't we joyful for this moment, when all is at stake? We are, we are. And do not stand in the way of our joy.
For what is life, if not a theater of the soul where we might take our part for good or ill? What better thing do we have to do in these months ahead than save the world? We will, we will. And do not stand in the way of our joy.
(snip)
Great advice, from a woman who lived for a century and witnessed all the good, bad, ugly, evil, tragic, and glorious in it.

I liked 'the rest of the story' too, but I didn't feel like the Dodge commercial accurately represented the current farmer, and looking back on Paul Harvey's work it seems a little corny.

(4,840 posts)Ultimately it is useless to implore others to cooperate in our individual idea of happiness. It just leads to more frustration. Judgement from others will continue no matter what we say or do, and usually because we keep involving others in our saying and doing. We are not going to find undisturbed happiness on a forum loaded with different and contradictory perspectives.
If you want to be perfectly happy, all you need is yourself. Unhappiness takes teamwork.
