It was a stroke of luck that his gangrenous leg was amputated by an Army surgeon in a cave on Corregidor -- luck because he was kept in the prison camp there and not sent to the even more hideous work camps flung across the Pacific. A one-legged man could not do manual labor. That saved his life, although he was even so subjected to starvation and torture by the Japanese Imperial Army. He was a POW from the fall of Corregidor to the liberation more than three years later. "Never forget", he told us.
