I just e-filed my taxes. It is nice to have it done with. I'm getting a good refund this year, so that will be helpful as well.

I did mine with Turbo Tax and H&R Block this year as a comparison. I was never a huge fan of TT, but after seeing how much worse HRB was, I don't think I'll ever complain about it again.

Any idea how long it to expect between filing and getting a refund?

Refund was in my checking account in about a week.

2. I haven't seen the first 1099s yet,

never mind the amended ones that always roll in between now and July.

I will probably do my taxes on April Fool's Day, as usual, unless I still haven't got them by then.

4. 1099 Mailing deadline was extended to 2/15. You should see them after that.

Though most banks did theirs under the usual deadlines.

3. I owe the government money.

The taxes are completed, but I won't file until the 15th. Its earning interest in my account, so I'll wait to pay it.

5. no.. but I DID just make an appt.

with H&R. Our taxes are different this year. Mr Banana has been retired, we had to take a chunk out of our 401K-ish account because of Sandy. Just a batch of stuff to deal with that's new for us.

Making the appointment will finally get me to tally up the medical expenses etc etc...

By mail. I am getting a refund. When the checks come, they come.
