October 1977 interview
High Times: How did you get out of the draft?
Ted Nugent: Ted was a young boy, appearing to be a hippie but quite opposite in fact, working hard and playing hard, playing rock and roll like a deviant. People would question my sanity, I played so much. So I got my notice to be in the draft. Do you think I was gonna lay down my guitar and go play army? Give me a break! I was busy doin it to it. I had a career Jack. If I was walkin around, hippying down, getting loaded and pickin my ass like your common curs, Id say Hey yeah, go in the army. Beats the poop out of scuffin around in the gutters. But I wasnt a gutter dog. I was a hard workin, motherfuckin rock and roll musician.
I got my physical notice 30 days prior to. Well, on that day I ceased cleansing my body. No more brushing my teeth, no more washing my hair, no baths, no soap, no water. Thirty days of debris build. I stopped shavin and I was 18, had a little scraggly beard, really looked like a hippie. I had long hair, and it started gettin kinky, matted up. Then two weeks before, I stopped eating any food with nutritional value. I just had chips, Pepsi, beer-stuff I never touched-buttered poop, little jars of Polish sausages, and Id drink the syrup, I was this side of death, Then a week before, I stopped going to the bathroom. I did it in my pants. poop, piss the whole shot. My pants got crusted up.
See, I approached the whole thing like, Ted Nugent, cool hard-workin dude, is gonna wreak havoc on these imbeciles in the armed forces. Im gonna play their own game, and Im gonna destroy em. Now my whole body is crusted in poop and piss. I was ill. And three or four days before, I started stayin awake. I was close to death, but I was in control. I was extremely antidrug as Ive always been, but I snorted some crystal methedrine. Talk about one wounded motherfucker. A guy put up four lines, and it was for all four of us, but I didnt know and Im vacuuming that poop right up. I was a walking, talking hunk of human poop. I was six-foot-three of sin. So the guys took me down to the physical, and my nerves, my emotions were distraught. I was not a good person. I was wounded. But as painful and nauseous as it was cause I was really into bein clean and on the ball I made gutter swine hippies look like football players. I was deviano.
So I went in, and those guys in uniform couldnt believe the smell. They were ridiculin me and pushin me around and I was cryin, but all the time I was laughin to myself. When they stuck the needle in my arm for the blood test I passed out, and when I came to they were kicking me into the wall. Then they made everybody take off their pants, and I did, and this sergeant says, Oh my God, put those back on! You fucking swine you! Then they had a urine test and I couldnt piss, But my poop was just like ooze, man, so I poop in the cup and put it on the counter. I had poop on my hand and my arm. The guy almost puked. I was so proud. I knew I had these chumps beat. The last thing I remember was wakin up in the ear test booth and they were sweepin up. So I went home and cleaned up.
They took a putty knife to me. I got the street rats out of my hair, ate some good steaks, beans, potatoes, cottage cheese, milk. A couple of days and I was ready to kick ass. And in the mail I got this big juicy 4-F. Theyd call dead people before theyd call my ass. But you know the funny thing about it? Id make an incredible army man. Id be a colonel before you knew what hit you, and Id have the baddest bunch of motherfuckin killers youd ever seen in my platoon. But I just wasnt into it. I was too busy doin my own thing, you know?
(posted for the Google incapable media, because if I see Nugent getting more camera time and fawning than the honorable men and women in uniform attending tonight, I will lose it.)

Instead of hard work, they call an uncle or family friend to get that higher position w/o paying the dues for it. They have to justify what they do so they put down the rest of us and say we are undeserving and inferior. How Ted Nugent can think that what he did was cool is beyond me.

Just like Dick Cheeney and all the other cowards who
feel it's the other man's place to die for his country.
He shows absolutely no shame, no remorse, and
no insight regarding his actions. He actually brags
about what he's done.
I'm sure the other DU's here with the Viet Nam Ribbon
icons have strong feelings about this pretend tough-guy.
He was "too busy", had "other things to do", and decided
to opt out of the draft.
OK -- If I were in his place, I may have done similar things in
order to avoid dying. BUT he doesn't admit to being afraid --
just being "too busy". And he brags about getting away with
it as if it is a source of PRIDE !
The justification of cowardice in typical chickenhawk fashion.
Talk the Talk -- but can't Walk the Walk...
What he neglects to (or chooses not to) acknowledge is
that ANOTHER YOUNG MAN WENT TO VIET NAM IN HIS PLACE.
The thought that another man may have DIED because I
avoided combat and expected that man to take my place
is a thought that would haunt my conscience forever.
But therein lies the nut of his psyche. This piece of shit has no
conscience. He lives in a world of delusion, conceit, self-importance,
and SHAMELESSNESS.
Republicans are impervious to Cognitive Dissonance.
Within the same paragraph, he laughs about getting away with
a deception and then crows about his grandiose fantasy
about being tough enough to become a Colonel. War and Patriotism
are nothing more than John-Wayne-movie jingoism to a chickenhawk.
His world view and his view of himself are totally removed
from anything resembling reality. I HATE PEOPLE LIKE HIM!
Please, somebody, somewhere, kick this guys ass.

But to read a first hand account of it from the Nuge itself, along with the self-congratulatory expressions of delight in his actions and editorial side comments about how wonderful he was as a musician and all around human being, turned my distaste for Nugent into dislike and disdain. What a total putz.

(1,397 posts)While Ted was dodging the draft, I was an infantry platoon leader in Vietnam. The normal tour of duty was 12 months . . . I was in the bush for 10 months, received two minor wounds then was hit badly and evacuated to the States.
During the 10 months I led an infantry platoon, 30 of my soldiers were killed. For those of you not familiar with Army organization, an infantry platoon is supposed to have 43 people (that is, at that time 43 was a platoon). Because of killed, wounded, and sick, my platoon rarely had more than 35. Losing an average of 3 guys a month killed and double that many wounded really hurt.
But what hurt more was picking up a 20-year-old with the side of his head blown off and stuffing him into a body bag. I left Vietnam in 1970. Today I'm 68 years old and still, every so often, ghosts and monsters come out of the woods surrounding my home.
How many young men didn't have the resources Ted Nugent had? How many young men died in his place?
Ted Nugent is not worth a pile of cold dog shit. If Nugent gave a concert on my front porch, I swear I would introduce him to Mr. Remington.

The Army didn't start out so bad. After Basic, Leadership School, Advanced Infantry training, and training troops they sent me to Infantry Officer Candidate School for 6 months and I came out a 2nd Lieutenant at 19. At 20, as a 1st Lt., I was leading an Infantry rifle platoon of the 101st Airborne Division in the jungles of Vietnam. I'm only half-joking when I say that the instant hot chocolate my Mom sent me from home helped me face those challenges.
My war ended when I caught AK fire that blew away half my teeth and jaw and put a baseball-sized hole in my shoulder. The Army promoted me to Captain, and after 18 months in the hospital they retired me for partial disability.
Many years after the war I returned to Vietnam three times. I laughed--and cried--with former allies and enemies-ARVNs, VC and NVA. I have more in common with them than I ever will with chickenhawk wannabe-Rambos like Ted Nugent.

(16,191 posts)There's nothing wrong with draft dodging. Serve America? Fuck that. You get one life, so why give it up so that some profiteer can report a better quarter to his shareholders, or some deadbeat politician can pretend to be a "patriot" and pander to hawkish voters? There are legitimate wars...like the war to free Europe from the Nazi's, or the war to free the slaves. Wars of self-defense are always legitimate. Wars to help your neighbors and allies defend themselves are often so too. Those wars are worth laying your life down for, because dying in a war like that really does contribute to the greater good. But noble wars are a rarity, and most are simply about gaining profit and power. Iraq? Afghanistan? Panama? Vietnam? Not so much. Hundreds of thousands of lives, wasted in wars for nothing of consequence or value. Those soldiers died to help a politician win an election. They died for nothing.
Nugent isn't a worthless piece of shit because he dodged the draft. In fact, I'll grudgingly admit that his methodology was a bit genius. Nugent is a worthless piece of shit because he dodged the draft and now INSISTS that others fight and die for the same useless wars that he so rightly avoided. He's garbage because he's a typical right-wing hypocrite. He plays by one set of rules while insisting that everyone else play by another. He's an asshole because he claims to support "freedom", while arguing to have rights and freedom stripped from millions of people because they don't share his moral views. To him, the only life that has value is HIS. To him, the only rights that have value are the ones HE supports.
Oppose Nugent for THOSE reasons. But don't smear the countless tens of thousands of Americans who have rightly opposed, evaded, and undermined the corrupt American MIC simply because Nugent happened to be a draft dodger. There is NOTHING wrong with refusing to cooperate with the military, and the world would be a much better place if more people did so. America would be a much better place if NOBODY enlisted, and EVERYBODY dodged the draft. It is not the "right thing" to kill people because a politician said so. It is not "cowardly" to refuse the call to serve in an unjust war. The bravest man isn't the one who kills on command, but the one who refuses to do so.

(9,350 posts)So, Ted Nugent is a coward. When I read the post, yesterday, about how Nugent had been invited to the State of the Union address the post included comments Nugent had made about President Obama, Secretary Clinton, and Senators Boxer and Feinstein. It seemed to me that none of what Nugent had said about those individuals was said to their faces. That made me think Nugent was a coward. This to me confirms to me that Nugent is a coward.
Yes, more people in the news media should discuss this issue. Every time Nugent goes on T.V. he should be asked to discuss his decision to not allow himself to be drafted. He should then be asked to square his past actions during the Vietnam War with his current desire to constantly threaten people with guns.
