Saying it's none of the government's business, a House panel voted Wednesday to bar cities, counties and the state from destroying guns that are voluntarily surrendered to them.
Backers of HB 2455 say the legislation simply reaffirms what they believe is existing law. That requires governments to sell any weapon that has been seized.
... The 5-3 vote came over the objections of Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox who was the victim of an attacker with a gun at a 1997 board meeting.
The bill is a result of a Tucson gun buyback in early January in which defense league officials said violated current law. Tucson police destroyed the guns turned in by citizens. Defense league officials said the legislation clarifies the law so cities can't circumvent it.

(49,445 posts)This reuses the guns rather than having to have new ones made. It's stupid to destroy what readily available and legal to purchase and own. it's a waste of money and resources.
I mean, it makes the gun dealers and gun makers happy, just like in "1984".
