Mississippi House Passes Bill Affirming Right to "Eat 20 Big Macs," Guzzle "1,000 Sodas"

In an unbelievable waste of taxpayer money and legislative time, the Mississippi House of Representatives passed Wednesday HB 1182, a bill meant to affirm the right of citizens of the fattest state in the nation to keep getting fatter.

"If you wanna go eat 20 Big Macs, you can go eat 20 Big Macs," said Democratic Rep. Gregory Holloway, the bill's handler. "If you want 1,000 sodas, you can still do that" (That's a 14,600 calorie meal, as The Clarion Ledger points out).

It's been dubbed the "Anti-Mayor Bloomberg Bill" by opponents. Sure enough, the bill's sponsor, Rep. Jerry Turner, confesses that it is indeed the Anti-Mayor Bloomberg Bill. That's a reference to the anti-obesity New York City law that bans the sell of sodas larger than 16 ounces in restaurants and other vendors.

In a rousing speech that nearly caused some members of the Republican House to soil themselves in excitement, Turner defended the law on the basis of championing "personal liberty," drawing "hoots of approval" from fellow Republicans, who seem to have forgotten that they are representatives, not a load of fratasses.

What Turner doesn't mention, of course, is that the "personal liberty" bill that encourages Mississippians to get even fatter and even unhealthier comes at huge cost to the tax payers, who must shoulder the burden of a healthcare crisis in Mississippi that is caused, in large part, by our 35% obesity rate. That crisis also means that everyone else's healthcare premiums cost more, too. But don't tell the Mississippi Republicans that, who have spent years wondering why Medicaid costs the state so much. Don't tell Democrats like Holloway, either.

i would guess given the state's miserable ranking in almost everything that indicates a first world level of economic prosperity. granted much of that first world prosperity too has wafted up into the hands of top shelf plutocrats and their paid hucksters, out of the hands of a suffering middle class. but mississipi is something akin to the last years of czarist russia - still clinging to fuedalism centuries after the rest of Europe. there may still be slaves there who were never told about the outcome of the civil war.

The Infowars crowd has so far claimed that Katrina, an earthquake in China and the earthquake in Japan with the resulting Tsunami, Hurricane Sandy all the bird deaths were all created by Government using HAARP and weapons.

Oh, and Obama caused the BP spill and used mind control to make every last one of the shootings and all acts of terrorism since before 911.

Plus, the new head of PBS in Georgia believes the Government is using mind control on all of us and he'll be doing that on the state dime. That's why I tell people to check CT out when arguing with WJs. This stuff's 24/7 and growing more every day. Here's the DU thread on GA:

Listeners, employees quit Georgia public broadcasting as mind-control conspiracy theorist takes over

I think she's probably mentally ill after watching some of her other videos (as if the Hades-burg video wasn't enough). But the fact is, there are people on our TVs and radio every single day who say things that are just as out of tune with reality and the real world. These non-clinically-mentally-ill people who spout these crazy conspiracies are only encouraging people who actually are mentally ill to leap off the deep end with them. That's the real danger, I think.

That's done more than people realize. I've known people who seemed quite sane all of their lives. Then they watched FOX and listened to Glenn Beck, then Alex Jones. And then they were off the races. They believed Obama was the greatest threat to their lives. None of it had to do with their reality - not one single bit of it. All in their minds, inserted by hate radio and teevee.

I don't recognize this country, though I followed all the trends and learned what they were listening to and watching and reading. I can't hop on board the plane to Nutsoville with them and they are ruining things with their voting patterns.

Still in MS who are FB friends. There's still hope for a couple of them, politics-wise, so your blog will actually help me out. I can link to it for a progressive voice on local news so they won't just have their tea party parents' views. Or the Jackson newspaper. Is it the Clarion Ledger? I don't think it does a great job, anyway. And I know my tiny hometown paper was/is horrendous. You really don't want to know how bad. I'm about to crown you the Media Giant Of Mississippi.

All my friends and family are safe and sound. Some have lost homes, but the community is really helping out and we're also getting help from around the country. All the local businesses have been out in full force, the restaurants are handing out free meals, local technology companies are offering free wifi and phone charging, nightclubs are hosting special events nightly to raise money for victims via cover charge, and neighbors are offering housing to those who lost their homes. Hundreds of students gathered today on the University campus to start the cleanup. It's a beautiful thing. We're also grateful for all the support from around the nation. Thanks so much!
