(9,942 posts)most of today's music couldn't hold a candle to Styx and REO when they were in their prime. and I've seen some old bands really rock the house over the years.

(22,143 posts)Adam Ant is Led Zeppelin compared to the crap that's out today but that still doesn't make him more than second rate.
I like Mr. Roboto.

(794 posts)have you listened to Clem Snide or The Dollyrots? Even the Donnas or Muse? Not from classic rock times, but all bands making great new classics. Give the kids a chance, this newer generation has some serious genius at work making music, just not on American Idol.

(14,557 posts)at a TICKETRON hoping to get tickets to see Elvis Costello & the Attractions.
The line was long but I was pretty close to the front so I hung in there. The lady at
the ticket counter came down front and announced that the REO Speedwagon tickets
were not going to be available for two more days.
And virtually everyone in line left except for about 10 of us. We were there to get the Elvis
Costello tickets and we all hung out a while after getting our tickets and talked about the upcoming
show and how the Rockpile was going to be at that show, also.
Best time I ever had buying concert tickets. Thank you REO Speedwagon for dragging your feet.

p s the concert was amazing.

I don't know enough about Styx or REO Speedwagon's music to make a prediction
on their ultimate legacy.

(11,464 posts)I can't for the life of me think of why any REO or Styx fan would want to see Nugent on the same bill, but, the opposite is also true.
Which is why 30 to 40 years after their hit days, they can play arena like the Meadowlands.
(It will always be the Brendan Byrne Arena to me).
The Styx fans will be on the beer line while Ted Plays
Ted fans will be on the beer line while REO plays and the promoters and the bands get to keep being paid and not have to get real jobs.
Ted probably got more publicity here at DU alone, than he has had the last two decades alone.

(192 posts)Actually B/4 I hit my teens everyone was in Beatle mania. Beatle hair cuts and Beatle boots, etc. When I hit my teens I started to like a heavier flavor of Rock, however the Beatles where always great and still are.Led Zepplin, Black Sabath,The Who and on and on.The amount of good song writing and talent was fantastic.I went to so many concerts to see all of my favorites, Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd just to name a couple. Usally these bands first albums where filled with great tunes. now I have a 16 year old son who listens to rap he wont even give the haevy metal a listen says he hates it . Oh well my parents certainly did not like my music. However I did appreciate the talient of Frank Sinatra,Tony Benit etc. However I was to busy gobbling up all of the great stuff on the airways, excluding top 40 hits (well not all of them) Those for me where the good old days 70-80s rock !

(5,842 posts)I recall the tour coming to one of the Northern Virginia outdoor sheds (Jiffy Lube Live?) last year.
I couldn't imagine spending more than 10 bucks to see any of these bands as a headliner act at this time.

(1,057 posts)I saw Styx a couple of years ago and it was an awesome show, I'd go to see them again in a minute, head and shoulders above a lot of the crap that is popular today.
REO, on the other hand, became a joke after Gary Richrath left, one of the most under rated rock guitar players of all time.

(5,179 posts)On edit: sorry, sorry. Old punk/goth here. I'm sure Styx puts on a fine show.

(5,842 posts)Granted, REO and Styx's glory days are far, far behind them. That said, they at least each had a catalogue of hits that get played to this day on radio and can easily do a 90 minute set that would satisfy casual and hard-core fans.
Nugent however...what's he going to do? Play Stranglehold, Cat Scratch Fever, an Amboy Dukes cut or two and spend the rest of his time ranting about Obama?

(348 posts)February 11, 2013 -- Last years debut of The Midwest Rock n Roll Express tour, recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the Ten Hottest Summer Package Tours of 2012, was such a huge success that Rocks finest from the Midwest REO Speedwagon, Styx and Ted Nugentare teaming up again for another round of shows starting April 18 in Grand Forks, ND at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The trek concludes May 19 in Burgettstown, PA at First Niagara Pavilion.
Styx and REO Speedwagon will be offering direct-to-fan access to the best seats in the house via their own exclusive fan club pre-sales. Visit StyxWorld.com to join the Styx Lounge for access to exclusive content, ticket pre-sales and VIP packages, and visit www.facebook.com/reospeedwagon for information about REO Speedwagon's ticket pre-sales.
To say that everyone on the tour is excited to get back out there would be an understatement, in their own words:
Due to the overwhelming success of last years tour, we are going to once again wind up the juggernaut of megatainment. Styx, REO and the Motor City Madman: there arent enough expletives in my vocabulary to explain how great this is but Ill try. This is going to be *$@@*&@# awesome! James JY Young, Styx (guitars, vocals)
Yo, wake up everybody! Winter is over, the snow is melting, the sun is coming out--it's time for the second annual REO, Styx, Nugent springtime extravaganza. We had so much fun in 2012 we all decided to fire this Midwest Rock 'n Roll Express thing up and do it again. Time to strap on our six strings, pack up the trucks and tour buses, get together with our best rock buddies and go out to have some big fun. See y'all soon. Kevin Cronin, REO Speedwagon (vocals, guitars, keyboards)
"Blazing vocal melodies and guitars, soaring arrangements steeped in Progressive Rock roots, heart touching ballads you know in your bones, and that's just my DAMN YANKEES brother TED NUGENT I'm talking about! Wait until STYX and REO take the stage! You might need to take the next day off after riding this glorious train! -- Tommy Shaw, Styx (vocals, guitars)
When you live the ultimate American guitar player's dream, with the ultimate grinding band, performing the most intense fun songs in the world to the most enthusiastic audiences alive, every tour and every concert is an indescribable celebration. Styx and REO deserve me. Here we come again baby, like dogs in heat! --Ted Nugent
The Midwest Rock n Roll Express tour racked in rave reviews during its debut run, including:
Tuesdays lineup of Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon and Styx brought album-oriented rock to a rabid, near sold-out audience that ate up every lick, groove and wail like it was manna from heaven.
-- Candace Horgan, Denver Post
The Midwest Rock N Roll Express tour proved to be aptly named and by the time the last guitar pick had been thrown and the final encore had faded away, its likely that more than a few in the audience were pulling out their smartphones to look for their chance to stow away as passengers to catch the next stop.
--Matt Wardlaw, Ultimateclassicrock.com
One would be hard pressed to find a tour line-up that can boast more combined top 40 hits and platinum recordings than that of Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon and STYX on this night, (the fans are) going to get their moneys worth.

(22,308 posts)I went to see Grand Funk Railroad back in '97 and Nugent was M.C. (or something). He kept running out on stage through the course of the night but never got in on a song, until the very end.
They finally let him join them for one song. The very last song of the night. A Little Eva cover, The Loco-motion (written in 1962 by Gerry Goffin and Carole King).
I still smile when I think of him being stuck to just strumming rhythm on an old pop/dance song. No wailing guitar riff or anything close to it.
Maybe you had to be there to appreciate it but to me it really was funny.

(22,336 posts)Three of my least favorite bands/"artists" of all times. I actually dislike REO Speedwagon even more than I dislike Styx. And Mr. Nugent doesn't even register on the list. I'm trying to think whom they could add to make the show even more ghastly but I'm stumped.
