Typical faux-rage topic that DU tends to latch onto.

(3,526 posts)Because, trust me, when a ship goes dead in the water (DIW), she will roll like you wouldn't believe. I was on a Navy ship that went DIW in a storm and 85% of the crew got sick.
....and you may need lots of these....

(39,961 posts)just reaffirms my decision to never set foot on a cruise ship. I wouldn't want to be packed up and trapped with a bunch of people I don't know for several days even with the ship working properly. Packed up and trapped with a bunch of miserable people for several more days than expected? :shudder:
That sounds like a nightmare. Don't they inspect the ships before they go out?

(39,343 posts)If Carnival had asked for help, or paid for it, things would've been a lot better. Airlifts and airdrops are done daily from Mobile to oil platforms. I worked on a ship in that part of Mobile/Gulf and have seen much faster support services. Up until not long ago, a carnival cruise ship ran weekly from Mobile.

(39,961 posts)I mean, never mind that people are going hungry and they are being told to go to the bathroom in the shower, got to save the almighty corporate dollars.
I wouldn't volunteer to go on one of those things if it was for free. My sister went on one, and they didn't have problems, but she said she wouldn't be going on another one of them. After her description, I wholeheartedly agree.

(39,343 posts)Supply ships head out of that port daily to restock oil rigs in the Gulf. Carnival didnt want to pay for it and now they are going to pay in the court of public opinion

(135,425 posts)betting that many, if not most, would overcome their fear. I'd be down that ladder in a minute -- even with my creaky knees!
At minimum, the cruise line could OFFER the transfer, and let people with a bit o'grit take it. When they pick up the people who need to leave, they can drop off supplies for the hardier who might stay.
There's a move afoot (may have already happened) to deploy an "at sea elevator" of sorts in much new maritime construction to facilitate transfers. The target audience is hospital ships, but this kind of tech would transfer well to oil rigs or any vessels where there's a need to shift people from vessel to vessel or vessel to platforms. It's basically a "plus sized" elevator-type box that people get in, it's operated by a crane, it has a bunch of pulleys and lines and what-have-you, and because it is deployed from the receiving ship, it is more stable when placed on the deck, and there's less agita, especially in the "getting off" part. It's very sturdy and steady even in rough seas, so "they" say, anyway, and it can carry multiple personnel at once.
Pity they didn't have something like that ready to go! Hell, I'd even hi-line if that is what it took to get off that sewagefest!

They should have just towed to Veracruz, as they were offered under naval traditions.

(348 posts)Which is always the best thing to do anyway. No need to pack a giant suitcase full of stuff you won't wear. It's very easy to get some boxes of granola bars and crackers on board.
The number one thing to always pack on a cruise is a flashlight. If you're in the belly of the boat and there's a power failure, you're stuck. A flashlight will make you mighty popular.
Cleita
(75,480 posts)Actually I keep a tiny pen sized flash light in my purse at all times. It throws enough light to actually walk a dark path. It's small enough that I doubt it would raise any flags if I carried it on an airplane or ship. Cell phones also make good emergency flash lights.

Or the fucker will go up in flames with no way off but to jump.
