(17,528 posts)However, maybe now they can dock and unload tomorrow during the day and more facilities will be available. How does 4000 people embark in the middle of the night and try and find lodging, showers, food and bed.

(5,810 posts)and help expedite getting the passengers off the ship, through customs and either on a bus to New Orleans to fly home or stay in a hotel in Mobile until arrangements are completed to get them home. Hotel rooms and transportation have been arranged in New Orleans for those who want to go on tonight or tomorrow. Yes, it will take some time to get that many people off the ship (something over 3000 are passengers, the rest are crew and staff) and they will have to go through customs. Mobile has a large terminal that used to be a Carnival disembarkation point so it has the set up to do this. They may have even brought in former employees to help with this task. The terminal was closed just over a year ago when Carnival moved the Elation to New Orleans. So there is an appropriate and safe place for them to disembark once they reach Mobile. There are ample hotel rooms in Mobile if anyone wants to rest there overnight and go home on Friday or Saturday. And they can fly from there, too, if they want. They just have a few more options if they go on to New Orleans, which is about a 2 and 1/2 or 3 hour ride by bus from Mobile.
The passengers could not be safely taken off the ship while it was still at sea. This has been discussed on other posts and in the news. It was much riskier for them to attempt to do this and unnecessary especially since the danger of fire spreading throughout the ship was over. As inconvenient and disappointed as the passengers might feel about this, it was much safer to leave them aboard the crippled cruise ship than to attempt a transfer to another ship or air lift them.

(75,480 posts)For those who don't know all the old wives' tales out there about disasters in the last hundred years. One of them is about a pharoah's mummy that was being transported to a museum in NYC on the Titanic. The mummy was cursed and we know what happened to the Titanic.
