Joe the Bartender was created by Jackie to provide a vehicle for tales of his real-life pals from Brooklyn. Forever spinning his expansive yarns to unseen customer Mr. Dennehy, Joe showcases Gleason's gift for holding the audience's attention with a brilliantly-executed monologue.

(5,810 posts)I was a kid and then teen ager, but I watched faithfully with my parents every time the show was on! A couple of other favorites from that time......Ed Sullivan and the Red Skelton Show. Never missed them!

(31,519 posts)I hadn't thought of those characters in a long time. We used to watch the show every week when I was growing up. My favorite show of the genre was Red Skelton.

Soul. This is the stuff that makes
getting old easier--great memories!

(813 posts)One of my favorite Gleason characters was The Poor Soul, done completely in pantomime. It was a testament to his genius in physical comedy.
