to protecting themselves.

The attack has also inspired a record number of women to apply for gun licenses.

According to the Delhi police department, 274 Delhi women have applied for gun licenses and some 1,200 more have called the licensing department to inquire. “These include not only the average working woman, but even students who travel long distances to colleges and even their concerned parents. They were eager to find out more on the procedure to acquire arms,” a Delhi police officer told the Times of India.

In a perfect world, there would be no rapes. In a perfect world, there would be no random assaults, muggings, etc., and people would be safe to walk anywhere, any time of day or night.

But it's not a perfect world--far from it. And in THIS world, if a woman (or man) wants to carry a weapon to feel safer, well, that's why they call it the "equalizer."

Best wishes,

When exactly are you supposed to shoot the rapist, before or after the rape? If you shoot before the rape then you weren't raped and if you kill the person without evidence of rape the woman will go to jail. Shooting after the rape doesn't heal the physical & psychological impact of the ordeal. Claiming self defense isn't a get out of jail free card and may end the woman up in jail while also being a victim. What if the woman doesn't want to kill anyone or have to live with that on her conscience?

You shoot before the rape happens, when you are in reasonable fear of an attack. If you shoot after the rape, it's revenge and you go to jail (assuming a jury will convict you).

And if the woman doesn't want to kill anyone or have to live with that on her conscience, she shouldn't carry a weapon. It's that simple.

And I'm talking about this country, by the way, not India. I have little doubt that India, who won't prosecute the rapists and who blames the victim, would prosecute a woman who shoots her would-be rapist. In this country we allow self-defense.

And yes, it's a helluva equalizer--most men are larger and stronger than most women. A woman with a weapon takes that advantage away from the would-be rapist. I know plenty of women who have concealed-carry permits and are trained in and comfortable with the handling of their weapon. If a woman -- or man -- is not comfortable with the weapon, he/she shouldn't carry one.

I'm not advocating that ANYBODY carry one. I'm just saying it's an option, and if Mrs. Bake wants to carry, so be it! She's a damn good shot.

And no, this sure as hell ain't a perfect world, and that's a damn shame. In a perfect world your date wouldn't rape you.

If you don't want to carry a weapon, fine. Don't. A lot of women DO. And that's their right. I'd much rather see Mrs. Bake drop an attacker than be hurt herself. And she's a helluva shot (I think I may have said that already).

the problem is that women were not reporting the rapes and even when they did not much was done about it. the police are very corrupt. you think these same people who do nothing to help women who are raped are going to side with the women when they say they shot someone because of attempted rape. and that's even if they are able to do that. should women always have weapon ready to shoot just in case ? what kind of a fucking life is that ?

how about the little girls.

there were 3 sisters raped and killed a few weeks ago. the girls were thrown into some well and police tried to say the girls killed themselves because they were hungry. it took a bunch of people protesting to look into it more and they found the girls were raped and killed. the oldest of these girls was 11 i think .

should those girls have been armed ?

more stupid shit from the gun nuts. the guns would most likely lead to an accidental death of someone rather than effectivly used for defense.

15. Not to minimize that, but compare Delhi to New Orleans
Sat Mar 9, 2013, 04:39 PM
Mar 2013

Differences in culture and law surely lead to differences in reporting and accounting, but when I read the OP I realized I had little context for the stats, and wondered how Dehli compares to New Orleans. (New Orleans is a perennial high-rape city, by American standards)

Delhi is about 16 million people. New Orleans is about 350 thousand. FBI crime stats for New Orleans, 2011 - 144 forcible rapes. (Maybe that is for metropolitan area rather than city limits)

If N.O. had a population of 16 million it would be close to 7,000 rapes/year. I don't know exactly what it works out to, given the many uncertainties in the different stats, but that back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests that Dehli's problem is not merely some third-world aberration.

Rape is abhorrent and laws should be enforced that Rapists (and those who aid them) should rot in jail for the rest of their lives. However, as you correctly pointed out if one looks at the numbers of these cases as a % of the population of the city, the Delhi numbers are considerably lower...In fact it has a 10 times lower rate than N.O.

I returned to DU after a considerable period and am rather shocked at how some posters say "oh it's the culture!" when it comes to such reported cases from India. To me, as a person of Subcontinental origin, this reeks of the "Ah those third worlders" mentality some continue to have. I would guess that if the cases of Rape were normalized for population, America as a whole would have a much higher % than India. Btw this post is not meant to downplay or brush the despicable cases of Rape in India or in any other country.

Thank you for posting a sensible comment!

Is it because it's easier when they outnumber the victim? Is there some weird bonding between the rapists? Am I the only one who feels that violence against women is getting worse, not better? I try to tell myself that it's a final backlash of the patriarchy, but seriously, I don't believe that. Misogyny is as prevalent with young men as old.

This commentary resonated with me.

The New Misogyny
By Kathleen Geier

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/political-animal-a/2012_03/the_new_misogyny035990.php

snip...

One way in which things are much, much worse for women these days than 20 years ago is the sheer amount of virulent misogyny that is openly expressed, and tolerated, in our society. It feels to me that, in many ways, our culture is much more openly sexist now that it was then. Rush Limbaugh’s comments about Sandra Fluke are only the most recent and notorious example of this new misogyny. You see it online; women bloggers, for example, report they are frequently the target of vicious verbal abuse, up to and including rape threats and death threats. Female political leaders of both parties are held to a double standard and subjected to much humiliatingly sexist treatment. Many movies and TV shows, and reality shows especially, traffic in extremely sexist stereotypes; TV commercials sometimes seem to go out their way to be offensive to women. Tabloids obsessively police the bodies of female celebrities and cruelly ridicule any famous woman who dares to go out in public looking less than perfect.

There’s an extremely nasty edge to much of this running media commentary about women. It’s not just garden variety sexism, because it’s very conscious of itself and a lot of it is clearly driven by pure hatred. Here are some examples of what I mean:

When I was growing up, there was certainly a lot of sexism in television shows, but misogyny is something different. Sexism was Archie Bunker calling his wife Edith a dingbat; annoying and insulting, certainly; sexist, definitely; but not violent or hateful. An example of misogyny is, for example, the way the character of the daughter, Meg, is portrayed in the popular cartoon sitcom, The Family Guy. Meg is frequently the subject of rape “jokes” and cruel jibes about her supposed ugliness; a frequent theme is that she is worthless and beneath contempt because she is not “hot.”

the previous numbers were higher than reported because people did not report them as much as they do now.

i don't think there has been much change but only difference is especially with recent news and people speaking out that women are more likely to report it.

but previous numbers of rapes were for sure higher than reported.
