SPRINGFIELD - This might be the last election in which Illinois voters go to a school to cast a vote.
A handful of Illinois lawmakers and police officials want to stop using schools as polling places, saying it is just not safe anymore.
"I just know in my heart of hearts, that if we continue to allow this, someday we are going to have a version of Sandy Hook," said Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, referring to the deadly December shootings at the elementary school in Newtown, Conn.
State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, is sponsoring the plan in the Illinois House. He said he would like to have his ban on voting in schools in place for the elections in 2014.
"There are other places we can vote," Franks said at a Tuesday news conference in the State Capitol. "Police stations, fire stations, even the post office."

(8,069 posts)(except for a couple of absentee/early ballots) has been at a school. They're generally centrally located, have sufficient space, are easy to find and well known to folks in the community.
I guess this is just one more time-honored tradition of American democracy we will all have to give up for the sake of "a well regulated militia."

(25,592 posts)If they shoot up a post office, we can expect airport style security to buy a stamp, or mail a letter. More fear, more of the time. Yeah, that's the answer.
I'm waiting for check points at major intersections. For our protection, of course.
I would question the sanity of the Illinois law makers for refusing to acknowledge the real problem and pass more laws that just diddle with the symptoms.
