Stonehenge, built around 2,500 B.C. in Wiltshire, England, is seeking a general manager for the first time to run operations as the facility expands with a new visitor center and galleries and the noisy expressway nearby moves farther away.
Possibly the most famous prehistoric monument in the world, the ring of monolithic stones have fascinated people for thousands of years.
"We are looking for a dynamic and inspirational person to welcome the million plus visitors to Stonehenge each year including the tens of thousands who celebrate the sun-rise there every Summer Solstice," Tim Reeve, English Heritage's Historic Properties Director, said in a notice posted on the Stonehenge website.
Stonehenge has had an on-site manager before, but the new position will expand responsibilities as the staff will nearly double in size to 80, plus 100 additional volunteers, a spokesman for English Heritage said. The new facilities at the World Heritage site are expected to help attract up to 1.25 million visitors annually within four years.

Born on the Summer Solstice, I'd be perfect for the job.

(42,239 posts)are the A344 and the A303 - neither being what you'd call a highway and definitely not a motorway.
Looks like they were going to tunnel it anyway but now intend to turn it into continuous dual carriageway :

From the A303 you just see Stonehenge in the distance - last drove past it a few years back when I drove west to pick up a kitten. To most of here its just there / just is - I first went there as a child in the '50s when you could just walkabout as you pleased.

(42,239 posts)the concept of tour buses didn't exist here then so you wouldn't have seen any.

(101,361 posts)(what you'd probably use between the south west and Dover, for instance) and is about 200 yards from Stonehenge, I think it qualifies for 'highway'. It's already dual carriageway within a kilometre of the monument.

(12,158 posts)duties involving liaising with druid leaders is important. According to radiocarbon dating, the construction of Stonehenge began around 3100 BC and ended around 1600 BC. The Druid priesthood didnt exist until after 300 BC. Druids, ancient or modern, have nothing to do with Stonehenge.
