I would beware of the crazies. Remember Reagan was seen as unelectable and was way behind Carter just before the election. Then we ended up with Bush. The GOP has had a lot of practice fixing elections. They act like they can run anyone they want. Maybe they believe they have already set up the fix and cannot lose.

Hamilton Jordan said in his memoirs that the polling within the White House had the election too close to call two days before the election, but that the news coverage the night before being dominated by the 1-year anniversary of the Hostage Crisis tipped the scales heavily in Reagan's favor.

Reagan closed the gap in the debates, and frustration finally boiled over sending people out to vote Republican for the first time in their lives.

However, this doesn't contradict your main claim that we can't count on the "unelectable" staying unelectable.

I could not seriously consider the possibility that Kerry would not win in a landslide.

Nowadays I hear that same sort of talk from Republicans (Obama is going to lose in a landslide).
