For me, it's only two--my ultra-orthodox Jewish cousins, and they don't even live in this country anymore.
I know a fair amount of Republicans and Catholics, but the right has demonized abortion and single mothers so much that I think they'd prefer to find a condom in their teenage daughter's purse than a baby in her belly or a doctor's bill in her pocket.

(135,425 posts)She has a bug up her ass about abortion. I've told her she shouldn't get one if it bothers her (she's pushing 90, so I don't think she'll have anything to worry about).
She can be motivated to go to discussion of religious objections to birth control, though not many care to engage her on the topic. However, she'd be hard put to explain why all of her children only have two kids each, so she probably wouldn't want to "go there" either.
In my day-to-day life, though, I don't know a soul who gives even the slightest bit of a shit.

I do not know a single person who has a problem with the use of birth control. Not one.

(15,438 posts)One Republican Peruvian woman *and her oldest daughter, both who assailed me when I suggested if my daughter began weedle-waddling for boys, I'd take her to the doctor to get her on the pill.
She was furious, stating that I was "encouraging" my daughter to have sex. But that hasn't been the case.
Today, my daughter is about to work for a criminal defense attorney, is enrolled to study to become a Legal Assistant (higher than a paralegal but just under a litigating attorney where she will be able to give legal advice and sit in beside her boss in court, but not litigate), is still sexually inactive (a promise she made with her boyfriend for three years now and he's fine with it), while both of my friend's daughters were pregnant at 14 (oldest daughter) and the second one who is a year older than mine is a mother of a two-year old - both unmarried and the sperm donor has skidaddled.
She's revised her stance on birth control now.

(14,337 posts)When she was young, and married, she had an abortion because her husband (also Catholic) didn't want any more kids. They subsequently did have one more for a total of 3. No BC? An abortion is better than than the Pill or a vasectomy? Hello? Both BC methods were around back then, but I never got into that topic with them.
She is now VERY, VERY religious. Guilt? She goes to Mass every single day and cannot miss it even when sick. She is CONSTANTLY asking her son, and my daughter, why after 3 years of marriage they haven't gotten pregnant. Umm, because they don't want to yet, and my daughter takes the Pill? They don't want to anger Mom and just try to ignore her, but she HAS to know they use contraception.

(11,916 posts)She has 5 kids. Her hubby finally had surgery because she said she wasn't going to.
SIL is Funda-evangelist and her hubby is a lapsing Catholic. I was witness to him telling her at their wedding reception that she could have as many kids as she wanted as long as she stayed home and took care of them. I guess he didn't really mean that since he 'turned off the faucet'
I do know she used both pills and condoms when she was dating and living with her boyfriend. My MIL made it a point to put condoms in everyone's Christmas stocking one year. She bought the multi-colored ones because they were 'festive'.
Don't know what happened to my MIL - now she and Dad have turned into some of the most fundy people I know. And they turned that way BEFORE they moved to Florida.

I tend to not talk about religion with many people because I'm not mainstream, and it's just easier that way. I'm purely going on my observation that none of my friends or acquaintances appear to be advocating or living the "quiver-full" lifestyle.

(7,429 posts)Why is it OK for a guy to have Viagra??
Look many women take the Pill for other reasons. I take it to regulate my period - also I cannot afford to have a child, so I don't want to get pregnant currently. And what would happen if I did become pregnant?? Who would take care of said child?? I have to work, so does my husband. Why?? Because the Repukes screwed Florida so much that my hubby lost his job that paid well. That would have allowed us to have children with me staying at home. Now, not so much. So even though I would love to have a child, I can't.
But in Repuke la-la land I should be at home barefoot and pregnant. No food or money - just pregnant!!

Oh and as far as the church goes, they didn't care.

(39,215 posts)think that it shows others how God takes care of them when they obey Him.
What is really funny is that in the one family with 8 children the father lost his job and they were on welfare for years. And because the family was so large even when they were working they got help - food stamps, college grants, etc. Then they ended up getting a divorce which only made it all worse. The only way they can claim God's help is if they acknowledge that all those welfare programs were part of God's gifts.
The other family has 5 little children and she stays home to care for them while he works at McDonald's. They are not seeing the big problem yet but it will come. He is a close friend and we have seen him unwind when she is not around. His drinking is not a pretty thing to see. If he continues on that road it is going to go really bad for them.

(8,646 posts)Nearly everyone I went to school with was Catholic. My parents were Catholic. So were my grandparents. My maternal grandmother in particular was very devout.
No one had any issues with birth control. AFAIK, not one of them DIDN'T believe in it. Even my grandmother went on the pill when it FIRST came out back in the 60's when she was getting closer to menopause. No one (except my grandmother who didn't HAVE any birth control for most of her fertile life) had more than 2 or 3 kids. Not my extended family after the introduction of the pill (my grandfather - b 1909 youngest of 14 - had several brothers that had 14-19 kids but that was in the 30's-50's). Not in my town. There were a few families with more than 3 kids but they were Mormon. They were regarded as freaks by the rest of the community. Anyone with more than 3 kids was regarded as 'insane'.
So, no, can't think of anyone.
