Hay Festival 2013 - 'Irritating' silent letters could become obsolete
Leading linguist David Crystal tells the Telegraph Hay Festival 2013 that in 50 years' time silent letters will be dropped from many common words, thanks to the internet.
The internet will make English misspellings acceptable, according to one of the countrys most senior linguists, who predicts that in 50 years time many common words will be spelt without irritating silent letters.
David Crystal, currently professor of linguists at Bangor University, told the Telegraph Hay Festival that it would be inevitable that people would drop the p from receipt, and change the c from necessary into a s, as well as simplifying other words.
Is it one c and two ss in necessary or two cs and one s? It doesnt actually matter at the end of the day. At the moment it matters, but over time one spelling will emerge and probably a simpler spelling will emerge.
Prof Crystal said that he started monitoring the word rhubarb a decade ago, by typing in the correct spelling into a search engine, and then typing in the word without the h. He said: I got millions of hits for rhubarb with the h, and just one or two without the h. I did the same job a few years later, and without the h got hundreds of hits, and then a few years later hundreds of thousands of hits. Rhubarb is still the dominant one by a factor of 50. But think ahead 50 years and that this is the time frame over which spellings change and rhubarb with the h and rhubarb without h will be equal.
He said that the h was illogical and was never included in Middle English.

Anyone know a good treatment for cracked ribs?
I'm pretty sure the doctors don't do anything except wrap the area with tape. I took a really good spill the other night (yes, alcohol was involved) and now I'm fairly certain there's one or two cracked ones under my left shoulder blade. The pain is epic.
I cannot afford to go to the hospital.

John McCain gains a new Daughter...
An All-American wedding! Arizona Senator John McCain's son, Jack McCain, wed Renee Swift on Saturday, June 1 in San Francisco, Calif., a spokesperson for the senator confirms to Us Weekly.
Jack, 27, is a Navy lieutenant and helicopter pilot. His bride, 29-year-old Swift, is a San Francisco Bay Area native and a captain in the United States Air Force Reserve.
The spokesperson tells Us that the happy pair met in Guam, where they were both stationed.
The rehearsal dinner was in the Tonga Room at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco on Friday, May 31. The pair then married Saturday, June 1, at Grace Cathedral with a reception at the California Academy of Sciences.
"Wonderful day at my son Jack's wedding!" Sen. McCain tweeted, Instagramming a picture from the reception.
Swift looked stunning on her special day, wearing a white sweetheart neckline wedding dress with narrow cap sleeves and a natural waistline. She completed her look with a simple necklace and put her hair in sleek undo.
Following their wedding festivities, it's back to work for the newlyweds.
"Jack will return to Guam for another deployment after their honeymoon in Africa," the spokesperson reveals.

The couple, who had been married for 30 years, made their divorce public on Russian state television after attending a ballet performance.

Far-Right Extremists Chased Through London by Women Dressed as Badgers
[font color=black]Source: International Business Times
A rally by extremists from the British National Party and the English Defence League was dwarfed by opposition campaigners staging rival protests in London on Saturday 1 June.
Shortly after lunch, a die-hard core of around 50 BNP and EDL supporters was confronted outside parliament by hundreds of activists from anti-extremist groups including Unite Against Fascsim and Hope Not Hate.
But in the event, both groups were upstaged by agitators of a different stripe. Decked out from head to toe in black and white, the group that won the day were campaigning for neither for race war nor ethnic equality, but an end to the government's cull on badgers.
And it was the pro-badger campaigners who appeared to steal a march on the political activists.

I know prostitutes
One I met at a strip club and we're good friends. A couple of others I met through her, another I met the old fashioned way.
All of them are in it because they like sex. The money is a side benefit. My friend, she is an office worker by day, a stripper and escort by nights and weekends. She has a bachelors degree and lives a happy, normal life. Her clients are screened, and tend to be middle aged professionals in unhappy marriages.
The other two -her friends- are of similar mind. One has a boyfriend who is ok with what she does. She is in school, working on a masters degree. She told me the money is good and that she enjoys her work. The other is not in college, does not have any plans to go back to school, and is happy with her life as well. She works in a department store and strips and escorts on the side, again because the money is good.
All of them say they wouldn't do it if they didn't enjoy it. They like the sex, sure, but they also like meeting new people, they like the idea that they're fulfilling someone's fantasy, they like the money. They see themselves as professionals, doing a job. They're comfortable with their sexuality and don't care about the prudish views of society at large.
They also acknowledge that there is a dark side to their profession. This dark side, we all agree, comes from the illegality of it: sex slaves, trafficking human beings, child victims, brutal abuses. These victims are not protected by the law. They can't go to the cops because then THEY will be arrested. They live in a society that shames them.
Maybe others here have similar experience with escorts as me, maybe not. I don't know, but this is my anecdote. I haven't ever met a sex worker who was forced into it. I think there are two groups. And I think we all agree that the group of women who are forced against their will into prostitution are victims of rape, plain and simple. I do not deny their existence, nor do I pretend that they are anything but victims here. They are victims of their pumps, but they are also victims of their government, and victims of a puritanical society.
Long story short: it needs to be legalized and legitimized.

Man beat 15-year-old girl brought to Twin Cities to be a prostitute
http://www.twincities.com/crime/ci_23385893/man-prostituted-beat-teen-roseville-and-st-paul
For those who are posting that prostitutes do that willingly, and that it's OK, please read below and at the link:
After the 15-year-old refused to prostitute herself again for Arteco Marvell Rhodes, the 38-year-old Chicago man beat her with a baseball bat, strangled her, urinated on her and threatened to kill her and burn her body or throw it in the river, according to a criminal complaint filed in Ramsey County District Court.
The complaint charges Rhodes with first-degree sex trafficking, third-degree criminal sexual conduct and possession of child pornography.
According to the complaint, the teen, identified as TJ, met Rhodes in Chicago, and he asked her if she wanted to make money and be "part of a family."
"Rhodes told her they were going to go to Minnesota to do 'tricks,' " the complaint said.
More at the link...
This is prostitution that is not OK. It's also prostitution that is very common in urban areas all over this country. There are people who work as prostitutes willingly, but that does not make prostitution OK across the board. Some of the men who pay for sex pay for sex with 15-year-old girls like this one. Some people may even know men who do this. I don't know any such men. If I did, I would turn them in to the police, instantly. This is prostitution, too. It's not OK. Not at all OK.

Native American student denied high school diploma for wearing tribal feather
A high school graduate in Alabama is being denied her diploma after being fined $1,000 for wearing a feather reflecting her Native American heritage.
I dont think its fair at all, 17-year-old Chelsey Ramer told WPMI-TV. I feel like its discrimination.
Ramer, a member of the Poarch Creek Band of Indians, wore the feather while taking part in the graduation ceremony at Escambia Academy High School in defiance of school policy forbidding extraneous items from being worn without school permission.
The school sent a contract for graduating seniors to sign before the May 23 event, but Ramer told the station she never signed it. Escambia is now withholding her diploma until she pays the fine.
About two months ago, me and the other Indian seniors from the graduating class asked our headmaster if we could wear the feathers on our caps, Ramer told Indian Country Today Media Network. She told us no and that if we did, she would pull us off the field.
However, Ramer attended and walked in the ceremony without incident. Indian Country Today reported that the headmaster who denied Ramers request, Betty Warren, has been replaced by David Walker, who coaches Escambias girls basketball team.
He said if it was up to him, he would give me my diploma, Ramer said to Indian Country Today. But he had to go through the board to get it approved.
Watch WPMIs report on Ramers fine, aired Friday, below.

[div class="excerpt" style=background:#FFFFFF] [font color=#800080] [center] Reply 7 by okwmember
[font color=black] Its ironic because the idiom "a feather in your cap"
means to have accomplished something. Which graduating would certainly be an example of.
And if there must be a fine to discourage others, why so large an amount? A $1000 is outrageous. It seems a reasonable fine that could be placed in a educational fund would be more than enough to make the point that we don't want students to deviate from the dress code.
More important than the diploma though is whether they can withhold her transcripts.

Texas woman arrested in ricin letters to Obama, Bloomberg: Officials
Source: NBC News
A Texas woman has been arrested in connection with the mailing of three letters containing a form of the poison ricin to President Obama, New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg and the director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, federal authorities said.
Shannon Rogers Guess Richardson of New Boston, Texas, originally called the Federal Bureau of Investigation claiming that her husband had sent the letters, officials said. The investigators found that she had sent the letters herself, they said.
The woman was arrested in Arkansas on charges that will be filed Friday afternoon, the authorities said.

World's Oldest Cancer Found in Bone of 120,000 Year-Old Neanderthal
Source: International Business Times
The world's oldest known human tumour has been found in the rib bone of a Neanderthal who lived more than 120,000 years ago.
The bone was evacuated from a site in Krapina, Croatia more than 100 years ago and has been found to have contracted the fibrous dysplasia tumour, a cancer which is common among modern-day humans.
This discovery by David Frayer from the University of Kansas predates previous evidence of the tumour by more than 100,000 years.
Before this discovery, the earliest bone tumour was seen in an Egyptian mummy around 2,000 years ago.

New Jersey Man Who Named Son After Adolf Hitler Shows Up For Family Court Hearing Wearing Full Nazi
Uniform.
The New Jersey man who is fighting to regain custody of his young children--one of whom he named Adolf Hitler Campbell--showed up today for a Family Court hearing wearing a full Nazi uniform and a Hitler mustache.
Heath Campbell, founder of the Hitlers Order hate group, appeared this morning at a Flemington, New Jersey courthouse for a closed hearing on his request for visitation with his youngest child, a two-year-old boy.
In November 2011, the child (and his three siblings) were taken into custody by state welfare officials, who accused Campbell, 40, and his wife of child abuse. Campbell has contended that he never neglected his children, claiming that they were seized by the state solely due to the their names (one of his daughters is JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell).

Man gets 30 months for returning used enemas to CVS
Source: Orlando Sentinel
A Jacksonville man will spend 30 months in prison for using about 12 enemas and then resealing and returning them to a CVS store in 2012.
Ronald Eugene Robinson, who was 34 when he was arrested last year, was sentenced to prison this week by U.S. District Judge Timothy Corrigan. He had pleaded guilty to product tampering.
His sentence will be followed by two years of supervised release, said U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman William Daniels.
Defense attorney Roland Falcon said his client wasn't trying to hurt anybody. He was doing it because he was in financial trouble.

10 injured in shooting accident at suburban gun club
Ten people were injured Tuesday night at a Kane County shooting club after being struck by buckshot fired from a gun that had been mistakenly loaded with a live round, authorities said.
The incident took place about 7 p.m. at the St. Charles Sportsmen's Club, near Elburn, when a 69-year-old club member from St. Charles fired his shotgun into the clubhouse floor, sending buckshot ricocheting and striking people who were nearby, Kane County sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler said.
(snip)
Illinois State Police Sgt. Matt Boerwinkle said that because no charges were filed, the man's firearms owner's privileges would not face any sanctions. The state police issue firearm owner's identification cards.

Slack-Jawed Yokels Attempt Tree Removal With Car, Fail Miserably

And now, for the most concentrated dose of stupidity you'll probably see all month
This amazing video surfaced in Oppo-town this afternoon when it was posted by reader Bring Back The Stealth. (I'm also taking the rare move of stealing his headline, because it's brilliant and I can't think of a better one.)
In it we see a group of morons, er, amateur arborists who attempt to extract a rather large tree using only an ancient, front-wheel-drive Oldsmobile shitbox and a chain. Needless to say, it doesn't work, sending the car airborne more than a few times

After 10-mile run, woman gives birth to surprise baby
After a 10-mile training run, Trish Staine was in pain. Not post-training-run pain. Real, excruciating pain.
I was yelling and screaming -- I thought I was dying, says Staine, who was in training for Grandmas Half Marathon in her hometown of Duluth, Minn. at the end of the month. Her family called an ambulance, and when they got to the hospital, they expected a diagnosis of a pinched nerve, a kidney stone, maybe a burst appendix, they told the Duluth News Tribune. But what the nurse treating Staine found was a fetal heartbeat.
And Im, like, looking around, like, no, I dont believe it, Staine told TODAY on Thursday. She says hadnt missed any periods, she didnt have a baby belly and her husband, John, had had a vasectomy.
But despite all that, Staine soon delivered a healthy girl weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces.
The Staines already have two biological children, ages 7 and 11, and two foster children, plus Johns three boys who are 17, 19 and 20.
