(28,784 posts)Compared to articles and comments on various news sites (none of them conservative ones.)
Rather than acknowledge that people are rightly pissed about this issue - and HAVE BEEN since Bush took office - the greatest concern of some here is how this issue impacts the party or the president.
To ignore the valid concerns just comes off as complicit in the unconstitutional exercise of power.
I hope this moment allows the U.S. to re-evaluate policies that have been in place since the passage of the Patriot Act.
If it takes republicans who so hate the current president and who try to use this to harm him as a way to make conservatives give a fuck and apply pressure to a Republican Congress to address this, then something good will have come out of this moment.
Beyond the DU bubble, however, people are pissed. At overreach by govt. intelligence services, at the complicity of corporations, and they're pissed about their own inability to have any impact upon what the govt. does "in our name."

(34,845 posts)Not trying to be a smart-ass but my guess is that the word 'metadata' means little to most so they aren't sure how to react to it.

(28,784 posts)Slate, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, The New York Times, Common Dreams... those are sites where I have read articles and comments and to which I compare the this forum.
Facebook shares and comments on them also reflect comments on those media sites.
Metadata is, in fact, a concept that many understand, both on the comments and from people with whom I am friends.
I know a lot of librarians. Metadata has been the big topic in archives for a decade, beyond this current moment.
People who read those sites, and many of my friends, generally have comments that are smarter than the average bear.

Obama Administration Declassifies Details On PRISM, Blasts Reckless Media And Leakers
Following near-simultaneous reports from the Guardian and the Washington Post this week, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said that contrary to press reports, PRISM is not an undisclosed collection or data mining program. He maintained that the government computer system is authorized by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and is overseen by all three branches of the federal government. He said that the program does not target US citizens or anyone known to be in the United States, and pushed back on reports that the government has continuous access to Internet companies systems.
Service providers supply information to the Government when they are lawfully required to do so, he said.

(62,325 posts)Prism is a different story. According to the President, the information on the Verizon spying story was 'leaked' and according to some reports, the DOJ is considering going after the whistle blower who leaked it. So according to the President, it was a secret program leaked by a whistle blower. Is he lying? One doesn't have to leak 'old news' as far as I know.
