By presenting so many counts or charges they are indicating their determination to get a conviction. And just one guilty count of kidnapping should be enough to get a life term in this case. The real point is to make the defendants cop a plea to avoid the possibility of the death penalty, and settle for what they would believe is an inevitable life sentence. This would be a just outcome, as it would relieve the victims from the burden of what could be a lengthy and psychologically cruel trial. It's a good strategy, and I hope it works.
