The Vatican is locked within a nation that has already demonstrated it would cooperate with the lawful requests of the United States.
So I hope the Vatican does offer asylum and he does try to reach the Vatican because it would mean the criminal would end up in custody and would face his day in court.

Are they going to deny the Pope rights to airspace? I think not. Nice fantasy, but it won't happen. He'll get to say in Russia, and in a year, or two or so, he'll be on some mundane flight to Caracas.
