The Patriot Act was put in place by the Republicans during the Bush Admin (the lost decade). Agree that many Democrats were strongly encouraged to go along. The Law is very long and includes lots of hidden crap. Our so-called representatives mostly didnt read it.
Rep. Holt (D-NJ) plans on introducing legislation to repeal the Patriot Act. http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023220667

(894 posts)Now, i haven't read the entire thing, and i wouldn't even know enough about how each part effects each policy and potential policy, but i doubt the whole thing should be tossed. i read through the details that different civil liberties groups support for modification, and section 215 always reads the most egregious. i do believe there is a lot of overreach so i'd prefer the worst parts of the bill be repealed.

(64 posts)It's amazing how many Republicans now cry bloody murder about the Patriot act. When they accused us Liberals for being anti-american for opposing it when it was being drafted.

(894 posts)saying they don't want extended surveillance, but they don't seem to upset over the patriot act in general. Were it to be up for renewal today, they would be for it in a big way. Dems would be somewhat against it, except now there is a dem at the healm many more of course would be for it.
that's the worst part of all, we're now stuck with it because someone from our own party has dropped all objections to it. Now there is no one to fight it. Obama did a lot of good things, but this act screwed us for a long long time, possibly indefinitely.
I am PRAYING that when it's up for renewal there is a push to modify it. Obama has the chance to do that.

(3,109 posts)We also need to get rid of the Department of Homeland Security and return the agencies in it to their original status.

(18,585 posts)The immediate aftermath of a tragedy, when emotions are running high- is never the right time to pass sweeping legislation in response.
Careful, calculated though- that ought to be *required* for legislation to be passed.
