One Man Stops, Dozens of Others Walk Past Shivering Dog

Written by Ed Kostro of Illinois

The new year had started on a very sad note — there was another very sad phone call concerning a tiny dog apparently dumped in a big city park. “She really looks sad, lonely, and frightened. Have you got time to come out here?” How could I refuse? “I’ll be right there.”

And when I got there, she immediately broke my heart. She was forlornly sitting there at a snow-covered baseball diamond, trembling uncontrollably, and so very sadly watching numerous people who were very happily walking their happy canines all about.

“When we first spotted her, she was frantically racing all around the park, as if she were looking for someone. Now, she’s just been sitting there, as if she’s given up.”

I slowly approached her, and she didn’t move a muscle. So I bent down and I softly stroked her furry little head. And now, she very sadly looked up into my eyes with the saddest pair of canine eyes that I had ever seen. Definitely dumped here by someone, I thought to myself.

Just like those who identify with abandoned and abused animals may have had similar experiences in their lives. I can't imagine what it would be like to have to give up your dog and I hope I never have to find out.

My neighbor is terminally ill and he gave up his beloved dog recently. I couldn't help him because I already have two and that is one over the limit for my landlord. Really felt terrible to not be able to help them.

I try not to judge people that I know little about. Most people's lives are much harder than they let on.

What the world needs now is love.

There are better ways than to dump it in a park in a snowstorm.

I would love a dog but my apt doesn't allow for them. All I have is a cat that I don't particarly like.

people dump unwanted animals out in the country. Though wrong, at least in a large city park the animal has a chance someone will save their life.

We've had two schipperkes dropped off here. I called neighbors, vets, humane society, etc. no one knew of a miller or pet owner.

Millers do drop off old non producing dogs.

Finally got hold of Schipperke rescue and they drive up from Colorado and took them.

People turn senior dogs into the pound all the time. How they can live with themselves I do not know.

Sure maybe some are out of work but my dogs are like my kids. I wouldnt give them up ( maybe during teen years). Sorry that is no excuse for me.

along a lonely little stretch of road in a kind of a rural, isolated area. I was the first one on the scene, and fortunately, a local resident who clearly loved animals as well came along shortly thereafter. He lived just down the road, and went back to his place and came back with his wife and a large carrier to corral them all.

Sadly, we couldn't grab one of the kittens as the ditches along the road were very steep with lots of underbrush, but the remaining kitties were taken to the local shelter the next day. The kittens were just adorable, and I'm sure they were adopted out in nanoseconds!

My wife happened upon him on a country road in southwest Virginia.

Old beagle -doesn't hear much at all, doesn't see but shapes (and only close-up, at that). But such a sweet old boy. He had ticks all over him, the size of dimes. We think "that dog wouldn't hunt" anymore, and so a hunter dumped him. He has THE most active nose- even more so than our treeing walker coonhound and our dachshund!

Months later, he's doing great. Lives outside in our fenced-in property. Plenty of food, water, shelter. He'll live out his years with love, instead of dying in the woods- alone. People who outright abandon dogs aren't loving people.

I lost my treeing walker a year and a half ago, then my beagle, and last week my dachshund. I have a king shepherd left and she is just moping around this week missing the doxy. I wish we did not outlive them.

People would drive out to the Blue Ridge mountains to dump their unwanted pets. So did the puppy mills and pet shops. Of course, the only thing these little abandoned dogs faced was a slow death by starvation or if they were lucky, a faster death by predator. My partner and I adopted where we could, but there were just too many.
