"I told him there's no other dad I'd rather have. They will know who their grandfather was."

"I asked him if he wanted to know and he did. And it was hard for me to say it. So emotional," Russell said. "It was very sad for him. He was crying on the ventilator. He had a tube down his throat so all you could see was the tears."

"But he understood?" CBS 12's Jana Eschach asked.

"Oh, he was very coherent," Russell said.

Russel explained to his dad that he was paralyzed; shot by Peavey on a killing spree that took three other lives on July 21, including Peavey himself.

"Then obviously things got worse," Christy said.
