I've been looking forward to the launching of Aljazeera America TV news program today. It has been a good source of news online and best of all the Newshour report is that it won't have as many commercials! On the site it says we can find the channel by area code. I tried a number of area codes here and of friends around the country but nothing available. Is anyone getting it?

(26,268 posts)To be honest, I completely forgot it was launching, today. I'm going to definitely check it out, tomorrow.

(51,122 posts)However, your cable company may not have updated their listings.
Look for Current TV. They will be in that place.
Or just search for your town + Al Jazeera + your cable provider.
I found it by searching for Philadelphia + Al Jazeera + Verizon FiOS.

(483 posts)we are getting it on comcast here in PA - area code 717. It is on the channel #107, which used to be Current TV.
Watched their 1 hour evening news. Compared to network news, Cnn, etc. it was refreshing, and only about 6 minutes of commercials.

(20,453 posts)See my comments from earlier today. I get it on the same channel that Current TV operated from.
Their website will direct you to local channels, but that's a good rule.

(2,012 posts)Sorry I wrote area code when I meant zip code.
I finally found that Aljazeera America would be on Comcast in Denver replacing Current on Channel 107 which I don't get. Comcast said I could be upgraded for $10 a month (for one station I asked) Of course I am now getting more channels on top of the many, many I never watch, but I hope it will be worth it, as I think it's hard to find any good (and usually objective) coverage.
BTW I'd like to recommend David Sirota's new column which will be on the web Fridays at NSFWCORP (hello@nsfwcorp) on Fridays. He writes for Salon, lives in Denver and is always thought-provoking.

(2,012 posts)If it comes up unavailable that usually means it is not part of your purchased package and you have to go to "preferred digital" or some more costly package. You will get the runaround from Comcast and a different story from each person you talk to; sometimes if you complain about what you are paying they will "miraculously" find a promotional price. Pay attention to your bill, sometimes the cost is increased without Comcast having to mention it to you. And don't expect a written explanation or how to find certain channels. I finally got them to email me a chart of all the Denver channels, about 180 of them but 107 isn't on it! Good luck.

(794 posts)I dont know if this is true (my suspicions tell me "NO" but I read somewhere that al jazeera only allows people of the muslim faith to report the news. Does anyone know if this is true? Do they feature reporters from all faiths and none? Or is there some sort of faith litmus test? I really dont know the answer and my little phone gives me hell whenever I attempt a wiki search.

(10,362 posts)He's the evening anchor from what I've heard. Tuned in yesterday and saw an attractive dark-skinned lady, she may be Muslim.
Some rw cable channels have been trying to tie Aljazeera America to the Muslim Brotherhood. Money comes from Qatar but it seems to be all-american with bureaus in DC, NY, LA, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Miami, Nashville, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Seattle. Most anchors are from the big 3 and CNN (not FOX thank heaven) like Joie Chen, David Shuster, Ali Veshi, Mike Vigueria, Soledad O'Brien, John Siegenthaler, Antonio Mora, Richelle Carey and the bureau reporters seem to come from the area they're reporting on. And they've been saying they can report independently.
Let's hope it will be more like PBS, API,a real alternative to what is called "news" now.

(9,314 posts)I was very amused to find it grouped with CSPAN, MSNBC and the rest when Current could not get near that grouping. I had to expand my cable service just to watch Olbermann, but Current sells to Aljazeera and apparently being grouped with the other stations was not a problem.
I do really enjoy this channel. I think it will give the others a run for the money.
