Houston sheriffs successfully nabbed a would-be kidnapper and car thief using the Find My iPhone feature found on Apple's iOS devices.
As a 5-year-old boy waited for his father in the family's SUV outside a Houston, Tex., liquor store on Monday night, a would-be car thief jumped in the driver's seat and took off, ABC 13 reported on Tuesday. After contacting the authorities, the father began tracking the stolen vehicle.
"The father had an iPad that he'd taken in with him and he utilized that iPad with the iPhone that was in the car and was able to track it," Lt. Wayne Schultz of the Harris County Constable's Office said.
The constables on scene then relayed the information to the Harris County Sheriff's office, who distributed the information to their deputies in near-real time. Deputies eventually caught up with the SUV and returned the child to his family unharmed.

(39,343 posts)They have some wonderfully small trackers now that can be used very discreetly. I used to work in the sneaky arts and they are very handy. Plus I'm usually always with my girl.

(39,343 posts)or local spy shops. Just tell them what you want to do with them (ie track your kids).
Check the shop's references because unfortunately there are a lot of people selling flea market spy gadgets that don't work.
If you really want a good product, I'd rec checking with a private investigator, or let me know if you want me to check with a guy.

(12,665 posts)Leave child in car at liquor store, apparently with doors unlocked and/or keys in car; but take in the ipad.
Granted, I'm overjoyed this technology worked to save this child's life.

(34,109 posts)while we were seeding a bunch of acres by hand. We found it using an app that sends a siren if you need to locate, the GPS was not close enough to find it.
If my kids were small I would certainly use something like that.
I lost my Android at Cedar Point in the bathroom this summer. Hit the alarm from my husbands phone and low and behold it was turned in screaming. Those things are awesome in those situations.

(4,220 posts)We were having dinner in a Santa Monica restaurant and when we went to leave she noticed her bag was gone, it had been hanging from the back of her chair. Made a big stink about it to the manager, I saw CC cameras and asked him (made him) look at the tapes immediately. Meanwhile my GF and her cousin called the cops. Incredibly, by the time the cops got there 5 minutes later, the manager had found the identified the robbery on the "tape" and we had a clear description of the theif. As my GF gave the cops her info, I "pinged" her phone with my iPhone and could see her iPhone/bag was about a mile down the road, essentially. I showed this to the cops, it was a parking lot of what looked like a strip mall. Two police cars had shown up, one proceeded to roar away to where the iPhone/bag supposedly was. The other cop took the rest of her info and then left to follow his partner. I "pinged" her iPhone again and it still seemed to be in the same location. So not really believing the cops had gone there, WE proceeded to where the iPhone/bag seemed to be. As we rolled up, I could not believe what we were seeing, the cops had the guy in cuffs and as I pulled into the parking lot they were actually CALLING ME to come there. We identified the bag and my GF signed something and that was that.
All of this took less than 40 minutes... It all happened so fast that it seemed almost like a bad dream as we drove home...
Find my iPhone--- gotta love it!!!
