A group of thousands of "patriots" was planning on taking over Washington, DC yesterday, by force if necessary. According to their Facebook page,
We are NOT going to ask congress to Impeach Obama And HIS Administration,
We ARE going to DEMAND it!
They were planning on using tractor-trailers to block the roads into and out of the city. The trailers would also serve as temporary jail facilities in which to hold members of Congress and other officials who didn't comply with their demands. They were not going to be armed themselves, but planned to have an armed citizen's militia waiting in the wings in Virginia to come and save them if authorities in DC became violent. Some of the planners envisioned this as a multi-day event.
This was the gathering that was so nuts that even angry wingnut lunatic Police Chief Mark Kessler of Gilberton, PA distanced himself from it.
They had it all planned out. They were pissed and they weren't going to take it anymore.
Here's a shot of the National Mall at 3:48 pm yesterday (courtesy of the birther debunking blog Obama Conspiracy Theories.).

(5,105 posts)if they actually tried to pull this off. They could be loaded in the trucks and disbursed onto military ships headed to Iraq or some other hellhole, then they can show how "patriotic" they are by filling in for the Real Americans who are getting killed over there.

(66,369 posts)They did a feature on a KKK loser in Florida. He was this doughy, shambling, blank-faced kid who owned an AK-47, and fancied himself a great white leader. He told the reporter that he had called for a massive rally of skinheads in order to start the great "race war" that so many of those knuckleheads wet-dream about. He showed her his AK and insisted that he "would use it if I have to."
The great, massive, world-changing rally never happened. Nobody showed up. The feature ended with video of this guy sauntering aimlessly around his Florida town, wearing black fatigues, doing nothing, and ostensibly thinking about the day when 'superior' beings like himself would be in charge of the world.
He seemed so lost and so empty, I was tempted to feel sorry for him.
But guys like that end up victimized by their own hatred; and never learn the value of loving others, and reaching out...

(22,308 posts)That is the Capital Building. It seems to be taken from the top of the Washington Monument (which is still closed for repairs due to earthquake damage). The Lincoln Memorial is in the opposite direction. Directly behind the person taking this picture. Maybe it was taken from a helicopter. I can't really explain that photo.
To my knowledge, and I could easily be wrong, rallies are held around the reflecting pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the WWII Memorial (and the Washington Monument). The buildings you see to the left and right are mostly Smithsonian museums.
Not that I am trying to justify why that is empty. Maybe those people are so lost that they don't even know where they were supposed to rally. Maybe there were actually more people in this shot than from the other direction. Personally, I think this is the wrong picture, but what do I know.
In contrast, some pics from the 50th anniversary of The March On Washington a few weeks ago (which I attended).

(22,308 posts)I had never heard of one being held there.
It is a nice big area. I can see how it would be a great spot.
