(1,643 posts)So what is the pro-Obama narrative that is forming here? What is the anti-Obama narrative? I've been on the sidelines, but I just flat out don't have the patience to research the "zeitigal" mutex of what the hell is going on lately...

(14,459 posts)BOG Section of DU says the President planned this the whole time and he out-chessed everyone.
The rest of the group has various takes on it, so I can't say what the "anti" is. I guess we could call it the Anti-BOG reaction: "We were watching this too, and that's not what I saw."
Motown_Johnny
(22,308 posts)It may have been acknowledged as one possibility, but that does not make it a plan.
I think the President was planning on hitting Syria. He just took it slow (as is his style) and let all the pieces fall into place before he did it. This fell into his lap, but he was smart enough to position himself so that it could fall into his lap.
If he had attacked before going to the G-20, as most of us thought he would, then this never could have happened.
The plan was to exhaust every diplomatic solution before striking. This long shot panned out (or at least appears to have panned out at this point).

(1,589 posts)which makes all of the recent hysteria seem even more ludicrous.
planning on hitting syria...._willing_ to hit syria. as he/we should have in an attempt to degrade the assad regimes capabilities to use chemical weapons again.

(21,115 posts)you have a contingency plan no matter what happens...
You make various plans around what the opponent decides to do..but you for sure have a plan...

(32,723 posts)About this time last year Obama was getting hammered with questions about why we weren't getting involved in Syria and he mentioned the "red line" would be chemical weapons. Fast forward almost a year. Chemical weapons are used. The media plays "gotcha" about his prior comments and acts like children. Over half of them scream, "He crossed your red line! He crossed your red line! You HAVE to bomb him now! Neener neener neener!" Typical of Obama, he punted to Congress so they couldn't claim they had no say and he ended up with assholes like Tweety claiming if Congress votes against him "He's FINISHED as Commander In Chief" (Drama Queen much?).
Then, the G-20 summit provided an opportunity to settle this and he's grabbing it. He's trying to solve this without getting into the Syria Civil War. He wants this resolved and to move on.
Motown_Johnny
(22,308 posts)The legal precedent is pretty clear. Reagan even invaded Grenada without even telling Congress he was going to do it.
Pres. Obama, by going to Congress for authorization for a relatively small military action (given how large our military actions usually are) has challenged the War Powers Act directly.
It is a pretty direct shot at Neo-Cons and Bush's preemptive strike mentality.

It's not unique, it's not strange. What's unique is that so few are recognizing the peaceful outcome as one that had been worked on for some some time. OP was correct.

Yes:

So WS's "contingent" is virtually zero.
That, is why Neo-DU needs to die, it is completely dishonest.

(4,876 posts)The attitude that any criticism of the President is unacceptable and only done by haters, racists and people who want to see Obama fail. I spent a shitload of money on this guy, not to mention votes. I have every right to complain about policy I don't like without being called a racist or a hater.
Andy823
(11,495 posts)Everyone has the right to complain about what they don't like. The problem, at least for me, is not that people complain, it's about those who say the president is "a total failure, or he has accomplished nothing since he lied to us in 2008, or the man is the same as Bush and Reagan, and he is a warmonger. Just to name a few of the comments that go far beyond simply complaining, and into the realm of stupidity! People that actually post this kind of crap are "haters". They aren't complaining about a certain issue, since they do it over and over and over no matter what the issue happens to be, and you finding a post where they actually say something positive about the president is like looking for a needle in a haystack!
So there is no problem with complaints, only with people who show they have another agenda than simply being upset about one or two things that have gone wrong.
Whisp
(24,096 posts)if 'complaints' come in a semi attempt for real discussion, that is not what we/I/you are talking about at all. The superlative, absolute, black and whites where there is only extreme good (Progressives®) or extreme evil (worshippers) and nothing is shaded or nuanced.
But this fucking onslaught of the most degrading remarks made toward the President - one liners about how a low life lazy wall streeting do-nothing nothing he is, that is much much much much more frequent and that is what DU has become and I'm not going to lay down and let some of that sewage stand without a response.
And THAT is The Suckage of DU.

(7,099 posts)5% can be a contingent. For another, not many pro-war posters announce in so many words they are pro-war. There are a lot of names missing there. And let's say you're right: that just means that a loud and grating 5% of people are the ones being talked about.

(7,099 posts)I didn't fucking imagine the posts about missiles being the proper course. How diplomacy had failed because of Russia and China so we HAD to strike. You're not going to convince anyone outside a certain subset here, especially using a poll mainly used to express displeasure at the prospect of war, that those people aren't around and that they aren't now acting like Obama fooled everyone but them.

(25,026 posts)The important thing is we get off the bombing and eventually buying Syria track, the region maintains as much stability as possible, the secular governance in Syria continues, and that we don't foolishly bomb the village in order to save it building up a pile of corpses an order of magnitude greater than those killed by the weapons we would be trying to stop like a bunch of idiots.
All hail the prescient and omnipotent Lord Obama!!!

(3,247 posts)The other day they kept ranting about "a group" that hate Obama, but in fact there is only one Group in this drama. The rest of us are just a random assortment of sane DUers, the antiwar 99%. Feelings about Obama in this alleged but imaginary group (an Evil Other created to give the real Group coherence in its paranoid worldview) are all over the board. Most of us still like parts or aspects of him but Syria managed to unite everyone except the most authoritarian 1% against him on this particular issue.
On a Kinsey scale of love him 0 to hate him 6, or vice versa for that matter, I waver between 3 and 4 myself, but the ones who totally absolutely love him are a million times worse than anyone I've seen on the hater end of the scale-- if there really are any at all. Filled with hate for everyone from 1 through 6-- those zeroes make DU suck.

(10,007 posts)Notice how all the threads and posts are either a) motivational poster collages glorifying the President like a pop star or b) condescending vitriol for "haters". It's all about loyalty to/perceived slight of Obama the personality, rather than argument for/against proposed policy.
Some of us have been very consistent in our stance against war and degradation of the Constitution, through multiple Administrations, yet this is interpreted as "doing anything to drag Obama down" when it involves the most recent policies. They are just missing the picture entirely.

Those who want him to fail for the sake of failure, are few and far between, and for the most part buried under a slab of virtual granite.
On the other hand, since the Assange Reveal, and even more so since Snowden's, DU has been flooded with many many "defenders of the program".
AND then there were the PRIMARIES where DU split into three broad factions. Those who blindly supported everything Hillary, those who blindly supported everything Obama, and a handful of idiots who just wanted a functional democracy.
