A modest proposal

While I was sitting here today smoldering over the arrogance of the Teabagger/Repig party and trying to think of a way to get rid of all of them quickly without stabbing them all in the face 150 times, something re-occurred to me that I'd thought about 40 years ago. We no longer have to ride horses to deliver the mail. We have light bulbs, we no longer make our own candles. We have central heating, we don't have to light a fire to keep government employees warm, nor are we recent colonists from England wearing powdered wigs with decaying teeth.

I used to think we needed a representative government because representatives were better informed on the issues generally. They had also shown leadership in their communities as doctors, lawyers, businessmen, professionals in order to get elected to Congress. Sure, I saw a lot of money flying around and heard about lobbyists, but had faith in the system. I teared up when I heard the Star Spangled Banner like most Americans and had faith that they were there to do the right thing by all of us. That's what they said and by gum I believed them.

That veneer has been wearing away for 40 years, but it is all gone now. These assholes have no intention of doing right, but one thing is clear: They hate the president and what he stands for, whatever the fuck they think that is. And I think it's a little different kind of fear for each one: Of minorities getting equal opportunity, of gun control, of education and enlightenment beyond their narrow Biblical view of the universe, maybe just of change. It doesn't matter any more. They are worthless. And now they are beyond worthless, they are dangerous.

Just as I wondered 40 years ago why we needed the electoral college, today I wonder why we need Congress. They have done nothing for 8+ years, and before that they were factota for G W Bush, the most lethal combination of arrogant ignorance, misguided religious zeal, and dry drunk syndrome ever to hold the office of President. (I digress here to recall that W said he prayed about the war in Iraq, and God told him it would be a short war. Was God wrong? Maybe it was the wrong God ) They are doing damage now and will continue to do as much and for as long as they can.

In fact, we have the technology to enable every person in the country to weigh in on important issues. Why can't we be heard, individually and collectively, without the intervening filter of corrupt corporate money and special interests? Something is very wrong when 91% of Americans favor background checks and Congress can't pass such a law. That is not representative government. That is an institution that has outlived its usefulness.

With all due respect, I'm not following. Somalia is not a country I can imagine implementing the technological means for citizens to vote on the government's business, but I certainly could be mistaken. Did they give everyone Blackberries?

is an interesting concept to ponder but I would vote for keeping the Constitution as is for now. I would advocate for putting it to good use as a pitchfork-like tool to encourage these criminals to leave our halls of governance in short order though.
