Whether you sign up a day, a week or a month from now, your coverage won't take effect until January, 2014, so why not let the bugs get worked out before trying to register?

(32,707 posts)Your points are mind boggling.
1) You can get info about your options without actually applying.
2) The website is not the ACA. It's simply one way to register for insurance on the exchange.
Personally, I would wait a few weeks before attempting to enroll, but there are millions who are so eager to get insurance that they are willing to wait hours to register... so why should it be delayed another year?

(21,756 posts)"1) the quality of the rollout reflects directly on every one of us who has supported this administration in this activity. To have such a spectacularly bad rollout is just feeding the right wing noise machine."
The quality does not reflect badly on us... First off, the quality is outstanding. There have been some minor glitches and delays but both are to be expected with any system of this size and scope. Add in that none of the red states bothered to do their part, in order to try and make things fail, that the system was able to pick up the slack in an outstanding manner says a lot.
"2) I want information about my options under Obamacare so that I can speak from a position of facts to anybody who is attacking this new system."
You have no need to sign up to dis-prove the bullshit being slung. The teabaggers are still going off with blatant lies such as 'the ACA bill' and 'We are not responsible for the shutdown'. There are also plenty of resources available to get most anything else you might need, such as... The law itself... Google can help you.
"3) the teabaggers have made their argument that we should delay all this by a year. If the first day's meltdown is any indication, maybe they are right about that."
Meltdown... Please, not even faux is is peddling that bullshit with any success. Take a look at their 'glitch watch' page:
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/09/30/obamacare-glitch-watch-delay-in-launch-spanish-language-sites/
It contains both jack and shit that can be in any way interprated as a 'meltdown'... Bullshit plain and simple.
Advocating that we should give in to teabagger threats and intimidation because of minor glitches in a monster of a system is... A dumb idea. Promoting it on a liberal website is... Pushing their bullshit that this had even the slightest thing to do with the budget and IMO, has no place on this site.

(15,577 posts)This is a massive undertaking and delay solves nothing. Time to get people enrolled. The time period runs until March 31, 2014. Then people will have to wait until the next open enrollment period. Some hiccups are to be expected but we must start now!

(68,644 posts)As I have coverage, I have to wait for a new exchange plan.
But if I have no coverage and/or a pre existing condition, I can start getting care sooner.
Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong about this.

(51,666 posts)right now. It's that really expensive temporary garbage, though.

(62,276 posts)I have no doubt that people who are already insured are looking into the rates and plans that are being offered. I would bet even a lot of employer based plans can't compete and people are realizing that they're getting shafted.

(180 posts)My husband works full-time at Walmart. Their health insurance for spouses sucks ($5,500 deductible, $10,000 out of pocket max). He's paying for health insurance we can't afford to use. The fact that they cover spouses for full-time workers makes me ineligible for subsidies. We also live in a state that refuses to expand Medicaid. With my history of cancer (which made me lose my last job), I need better insurance. We are considering keeping me on his insurance (depending on what Walmart offers), him dropping to part-time so I'm no longer eligible for insurance through his employer, or moving to a state that's expanding Medicaid. If we decide to move, our house needs to be sold, which will take time. Also, there's the matter of transferring colleges without any time in between so my student loans don't go into repayment status before I graduate. We need time to compare everything before we decide what to do. Next semester is only 3 months away.

(32,342 posts)It's pretty historical, and plus the more numbers attracted on the first day, the more of a wallop in the chops to the right-wing.
I'm hoping for a better system some day, but in the meantime isn't it fun to be part of a history-making roll-out putting the lie to one of the most fucked-up right-wing maneuvers ever pulled during Obama's administration with this shutdown? Large numbers are good.
