Could this happen?
http://www.slate.com/blogs/weigel/2013/09/30/gop_moderates_may_attempt_coup_against_right_wingers.html
Rep. Peter King, a New Yorker from a moderate-voting district, has become the nearly official vote of Republican CR compromise. He'll bash Ted Cruz on the recordand he'll do it for free! The bashing has helped write a Republicans-in-disarray storyline (like reporters needed any help), but it didn't mean much. Until now. After today's House Republican meeting, King claimed that there might be enough moderatesmaybe 20125ready to vote down the CR that the whole pingpong game gets canceled, and the party has to compromise. This would happen after 6 p.m. today.
Isn't there a procedure that can bring a bill to a vote without the Speaker of the House?

(14,077 posts)1. That story is from Monday. King tried and failed.
My bad...
I just saw something on google news and did a search on moderate republicans. And the link said 11 hours ago. I thought it was something new.
meh... maybe tomorrow, I guess...

WASHINGTON For most of the last two decades, Republicans such as Rep. Patrick Meehan, who represents a politically competitive district near Philadelphia, have been the odd men out in a House caucus dominated by conservatives such as those aligned with the tea party.
But with Congress' deadlock resulting in the first government shutdown in more than 17 years, Meehan and like-minded colleagues may be the ones who decide how and when the standoff ends.

Even though this is an old story it is still the only way out. The (R)s in safe districts are damaging the rest of their party. At some point the rest of them need to turn. Even if it opens them up to a primary battle. There is no other choice.
