(20,450 posts)Don't care that people are being hurt by this shutdown. On the other hand, ReThugs are on the floor popping bottles of champaign, cheering and getting drunk off the notion. Somehow I trust the Democrats more on this. Sorry.

(14,139 posts)constituents--are still tickled pink at the harm it is doing to the GOP and how that will redound to the D's benefit in the next election cycle. Color me cynical, but I think most Congress Critters look out for themselves first. No, the Democrats are not popping champagne, but they know that the shutdown hurts the Repubs.

(20,450 posts)people to give up our checks. Even those who are sincere and will give what they earn to charity underscores the point that they have it to give away! We don't! Many of us who work for the federal government live from paycheck to paycheck! It baffles me why some people come to this thread to defend these people--who represent the Top 1% and yet I'm made to be the "ignorant" one.
If these members of Congress are so sympathetic about the plight of federal workers, don't fucking give money to charity, forego your pay!! Better yet, reopen the federal government.
If they can do one or more of these two things, fuck 'em! I don't need their charity!!!

(14,139 posts)They can not cash the check (if it even comes by check any more, which I doubt). But even if that happened, the funds have already been appropriated and as far as the gov't is concerned, that money has been spent.
NOBODY in this thread is defending anyone who caused the shutdown.

(20,450 posts)suggested that they will indeed forgo their pay. Washington state delegation, for instance...

(3,249 posts).... that being deductible doesn't make it free? A deduction isn't the same as a credit?
No, you probably don't, or you wouldn't have made that post.
Jesus, I hate to sound like defending the Repukes, but making ignorant statements doesn't help our cause.

(20,450 posts)How they donate everything to charity only to find out later how they game the tax system. I'm no idiot! Of course I know how it works. Studies have shown that Progressives, Democrats are less likely to record donations on their taxes while conservatives are more likely to do so.
You're just being an asshole for the sake of being an asshole and could've kept your pro-ReThug comments to yourself.

(20,450 posts)I don't trust anyone--especially a Republican who supported the shutdown--who tells me that he/she plans to donate their salary. Don't donate. Just don't get paid at all. Period. Problem solved. That way, I wouldn't have to start this thread and you don't have to look like an ass replying with your unnecessarily nasty and rude comments.

(3,249 posts)I was a Federal Government employee for forty fucking years. I thankfully retired three years ago. I know how it works.
I also know how federal income taxes work, where it seems you don't. Go ahead and rant on about the Repukes. It's justified. But your remarks about being able "to write them off" is ignorant. And you would deny donations to needy charities just because you don't like the donors? OK.
And I'll predict you get paid anyway, just like I did after being furloughed two weeks in '95.
Have a nice day.

(20,450 posts)and I'm baffled at how some continue to give them a pass.
When Nancy Pelosi controlled the House, the Democrats voted not to raise their salaries. Then the Republicans regained control of the House, they have consisted voted to give themselves raises even though the House has been the least productive in the history of Congress. Now they're paying themselves for being the least productive--even a do-nothing Congress--while many other federal government employees get nothing.
We simply want to go back to work. And I don't buy for one second that they cannot pass a long controlling their own salaries. That is bull.
