20. They can't forego their pay. By law, Congresscritters have to be paid.

They can not cash the check (if it even comes by check any more, which I doubt). But even if that happened, the funds have already been appropriated and as far as the gov't is concerned, that money has been spent.

NOBODY in this thread is defending anyone who caused the shutdown.

I don't trust anyone--especially a Republican who supported the shutdown--who tells me that he/she plans to donate their salary. Don't donate. Just don't get paid at all. Period. Problem solved. I was a Federal Government employee for forty fucking years. I thankfully retired three years ago. I know how it works.

I also know how federal income taxes work, where it seems you don't. Go ahead and rant on about the Repukes. It's justified. But your remarks about being able "to write them off" is ignorant. And you would deny donations to needy charities just because you don't like the donors? OK.

29. I simply disagree that Congress is as helpless as some of you are making them out to be...

and I'm baffled at how some continue to give them a pass.

When Nancy Pelosi controlled the House, the Democrats voted not to raise their salaries. Then the Republicans regained control of the House, they have consisted voted to give themselves raises even though the House has been the least productive in the history of Congress. Now they're paying themselves for being the least productive--even a do-nothing Congress--while many other federal government employees get nothing.

We simply want to go back to work. And I don't buy for one second that they cannot pass a long controlling their own salaries. That is bull.
