Obama Invites Hill Leaders To Talk Debt Limit

Obama Invites Hill Leaders To Talk Debt Limit

President Barack Obama invited Congressional leaders to the White House to discuss raising the federal debt limit on Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The Treasury Department announced Tuesday it was executing final emergency measures before it must raise the debt ceiling on Oct. 17. House Republicans are considering merging negotiations on the debt limit with a continuing resolution to re-open the shuttered government.

“We’re pleased the president finally recognizes that his refusal to negotiate is indefensible," a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said in a statement. "It’s unclear why we’d be having this meeting if it’s not meant to be a start to serious talks between the two parties.”

without his caucus to prop it up.

I guarantee you that Boehner will get an earful from everybody in the room, including McConnell.

Boehner will get nothing. Not even a face saving gesture.

Mr. Obama will use the meeting—the first with congressional leaders since the shutdown began Tuesday—to press leaders to reopen the government and reiterate his position that he won't negotiate on the debt limit or under the threat of a continued shutdown, the official said.

. . .

The White House and Senate Democrats have refused to negotiate conditions for Congress raising the debt limit, saying Congress had a responsibility to allow the Treasury to pay bills that lawmakers had already incurred.

"This is not a concession to me," Mr. Obama said Tuesday. "It is not some demand that's unreasonable that I'm making. This is what Congress is supposed to do as a routine matter."

WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama invited congressional leaders to the White House for the first high-level meeting since parts of the government closed on Tuesday, creating a potential path to negotiations on government spending and a looming debt limit crisis.

A White House official said Mr. Obama will use the Wednesday meeting, set for 5:30 p.m. EDT, to press leaders to reopen the government and reiterate his position that he won't negotiate with Republicans on the debt limit or under the threat of a continued shutdown.

It's about the shutdown and the debt ceiling.
Don't cut the parts you don't like or put a different light on the situation.

I truly hope he uses this time to smack them upside the head with polls. Maybe he will sneak in some Wall Street executives to give them the lowdown on what will happen if the shutdown continues. The market will not be stable for long.
