Go outside. Take a breath. Wait and watch.
I'm pretty sure the president is not going to fold with two aces down and two more on the table, especially since Boehner is holding a seven-three off-suit.
Wait and watch.

(2,679 posts)While my post count is low, I've been a member of DU since shortly after Kerry lost to W. And I learned over the years that there are certain people that post here, that it is wise to listen to when they post. WilliamPitt is one of those.

(3,521 posts)BUT, if the President gives in to their demands it is over. There will never be healthcare reform. They will do the same thing over and over again until their extreme minority is ruling the country.

(11,804 posts)Refusing to meet gives fuel to the bogus Conservative Claim that Obama and Democrats refuse to meet or negotiate.
Secondly of course there will be negotiating. They have the House - the current understanding is that they have to agree to a debt ceiling increase (which is what I think this meeting is about). What we don't want to see is capitulation.

(24,347 posts)Tell me, do you honestly think President Obama's going to sell the ACA down the river? Do you REALLY think that this has even the slightest chance of becoming reality?

(6,931 posts)I'm not smart enough to figure out what he's going to do, or if he's going to offer some negotiating tidbit, but he's probably got something up his sleeve. Maybe it'll just be "I promise I won't tell the world what an alcoholic you are". But I've come to believe that President Obama is pretty damn smart in these kinds of situations, almost Spock-like in his ability to think five and six moves ahead.
If it was me, I'd just keep my boot to the throats of Boehner and the suicide caucus until they cry uncle, but I'm not known for my subtlty.

(6,785 posts)It makes him look reasonable while making them look like someone that takes hostages to get their demands met, then shoots the hostages anyway.
Cautious optimism is warranted, IMO.

(23,105 posts)However, since the president "negotiated" cuts in SSI and no tax increase on the rich during the first time debt ceiling/budget snafu, it's hard to trust him now. All of a sudden, he's actually not going to give away the store as he has done repeatedly before? I definitely understand why people would distrust this. Actions speak louder than words and his actions on these issues in the past have been awful. Luckily for us, Repugs can't take yes for an answer so some of the worst proprosals haven't turned into laws because of their total stupidity.
I'm waiting, Mr. President, please show us that you really do have a spine.
The country needs for you to stand tough.

(7,960 posts)This makes him look good and them look like the unreasonable terrorists they are. If by some slim chance they accept his offer, they will still be capitulating big time. They will also be excoriated by their base. None of these are particularly bad things by the way.

(118 posts)I said something about this in a previous thread and got flamed for it but he ought to offer them the medical device tax for an up or down vote on immigration reform and tell them to take it or leave it. If he could do that he would preserve Obamacare, end the shutdown and debt ceiling fight and pass immigration reform in one fell swoop. Sounds like winning to me.

(30,481 posts)his administration normally floats a couple of trial balloons. These balloons are normally pretty bad in comparison to what he actually does give up. I have not seen that happen here.

(39,909 posts)but past cavings have been preceded by Meetings with Republicans,
so apprehensions about this meeting are legitimate based on past performance.
In fact, anyone who is not the slightest bit apprehensive at this point haven't been paying attention, or don't care about policy.
