How the crisis might end.

With the government shut down and default on the debt looming, a group of influential businessmen and military leaders visit the White House. They tell President Obama that a U.S. default will be so devastating that it must not happen. They direct Obama to use one of the proposed workarounds, say, minting a $2 trillion platinum coin.

Obama says he won't. He doesn't want the legacy of his presidency to be one of governing by gimmicks and loopholes.

The group say you will, because we have the guns.

Obama mints the coin (or whatever). Crisis is averted. Republicans explode. The House impeaches Obama.

At this point, who knows what happens? Maybe our military/business group decides to slip back into the shadows and let things play out. But you know, once you're a player, getting out of the game is hard.
