John Boehner is good as gone.

No matter how this shutdown turns out, Speaker Boehner will be Speaker no more. There is no way for him to win and he has shown dismal judgement in following the Tea Party extremists and shutting down our government.

Who will challenge him for the Speakership? Peter King? Or another one of his critics?

I see no way for Boehner to continue in his present role. Too bad he is not sober enough to see the writing on the wall. He could go out with a little bit of dignity if he permitted a vote of the entire House and opened up the government. He would still be kicked out of his position but he should be able to sleep with a clean conscience.

If he doesn't permit a vote and this, plus the debt limit, drag on and on, he is history either way.

I think he is close to making a decision?

but I can't feel sorry for him. He could have done the right thing for America and gone down in history as a hero. But he chose the cowardly way out and he will be remembered as a bumbling old drunkard. Either way, he is dead meat.

he could have rallied a few dozen Republicans to vote with the 201 Democrats to stop this dangerous game, and gone down bravely.
He is a coward.

His conscience if he has one should have bothered him long before he let it get to this point

has been honing his role as Brutus for quite some time. No doubt he sees himself as Speaker.
But where Boehner is a bumbler, Cantor is deathly ambitious and machiavellian enough to let nothing get in his way. Scary prospect.

...and any traditional Republican who does not support him/her will be labeled as "not Conservative enough" and face a primary challenge from a Teabagger.

The game they are playing is very clear now.

but maybe this will at least teach the elite to rein in their attack dogs a bit. This has all been a bit embarrassing.

After all, the Constitution doesn't require that the Speaker be an elected member of the House, and he's been more influential than Boehner among the teabaggers.

Hey, if you're gonna screw it up, screw it up RIGHT!
