(65,616 posts)just that much...you know that look. Like, "aw how cute the human is about to talk" that look and they do the eye squint at the same time and just stare at me. Yep, probably they want some catnip in their food. Better go grab some...
Oh no these cats purchased an electric can opener a long time ago...some idiot sent them a credit card in the mail with their names on it.
I hope they pay it off.

(38,187 posts)Cats are geniuses trapped in cat shaped bodies. Once one cat, decides they want something, they use those minds of theirs to come up with amazing ways to make it happen. And make it happen, they do. If two or more cats decide they want something and work together, look out humans. I've seen it happen.
After I had my gallbladder taken out, my three (at the time) cats wanted to get to me to greet me after I got home from the hospital. They were taking turns going around my aunt, who got the feather duster out to try to get their minds off of getting to me. One cat would go toward me and she would use the feather duster to get their attention, then the other two would start getting up on the back of the couch and the other end of the couch to get out of her reach and get closer to me. She had that feather duster going full speed all night to get them down. She stayed up all night long to try to let me rest and kept trying to keep my cats from jumping on me or getting to me.
I woke up the next morning with all 3 cats cuddled up to me on the couch and my aunt stooped over with her forehead on the handlebars of her scooter, asleep. I don't know how they did it, but my cats somehow managed to tag team her all night until they wore her out then got on the couch with me anyhow.
I wouldn't put anything past a cat, especially not a group of cats who decide to work together like many often do.
NJCher
(35,685 posts)is one of the best cat stories I've ever heard. I burst out laughing when I got to the part about your aunt with her forehead on the handlebars of her scooter!
There's stereotype about cats. People don't realize how loyal and loving they can be.
I have three, too. Often my spouse is away on business trips and I get such a laugh out of it when I wake up and find all three of mine perched in various spots around the room, hanging out.
Nope, me either. I wouldn't put anything past a cat and woe be to the one who underestimates a group of cats!

The two Siamese are at the bottom and third one up. And yes that box to the right does look like a cat bunker...one of their many citadels.
They look so cute despite all that plotting of evil. Is the tan one the angel of the bunch? My best friend growing up had a cat just like the second one from the bottom. He was one of the sweetest cats Ive ever met. I just love that color pattern.

(65,616 posts)the long haired orange is a Himalayan and is VERY fussy (also the oldest) far more cantankerous than the two Siamese. He puts them to shame. He is the only cat I've ever had that can use a toilet! He just hasn't figured out how to flush yet.

(8,830 posts)more regularly, I think. We've had gingers and they're nuts. Sweet, but total loons. My black cats have always been very sweet but also needy. My cream and gray tabby is also very sweet and mostly placid (apt, given that he isn't much smaller than a cow); her sister is more of a black and gray tabby and she's sweet but not cuddly. The gray cat is a bitch - but she had a difficult kittenhood.

Our cat is basically the same way with us as yours, super loving and affectionate. Just dont try to pick her up and everything is cool. But she runs for cover when strangers come, and if she doesnt run and they try to pet her sometimes all hell brakes loose. She'll be fine for a second then *wham* its hissing and biting time.

My two calicoes, so far, are in the same category as to friendliness - one laid back, the other is to young to be certain.
My other females (grey or black, generally tabby) have been crazy in one way or another and decidedly less friendly.
All my other males have all been friendly but less laid back. Except the current all black one. He is very opinionated and only friendly in the middle of the night. Other times he walks deliberately away at a pace which is just faster than whatever pace I am walking after him.

Tabbies (striped cats), whether brown tabby, silver tabby, gray tabby, orange tabby, cream tabby, or "black" tabby; and whether mackerel pattern or classic, are really nice in general. There are exceptions.
Cow kitties, those black and whites also called tuxedos, are also really nice in general.
Black cat can go either way but are often testy, probably because so many of them have some Siamese blood.

Ms. Toad
(34,074 posts)to expect that she would not be a nice kitty. So far, the vet is wrong - she is really sweet. Very klutzy, but sweet. I've stepped on her more times than I can count because she either circles my feet way too closely - or hides in the crook of the stairs and moves onto the main part just as I'm about to put my foot down.
On the other hand, the black (male) kitten she foisted on us a couple of weeks later was one she sure would be a real sweetheart. He is the most opinionated cat I've ever had about not being captured (even though once he is captured he will often purr up a storm, turn belly up, and look at me through half closed eyes - the rest of the time he is all tense muscle or apparently relaxed ready to leap at the first sign that I'm not really paying attention to keeping him captured.
And yes - likely part Siamese (based on his facial structure and screech when he is locked somewhere he doesn't want to be).

(34,074 posts)Before this thread, I would have said yes.
After reading through this thread, I'm not sure whether she is a calico, tortoiseshell, or tricolor moo kitty. Or a crazy mixed up combination of the three.
She has the asymmetric nose/back of headhead and mottled coloring on the back and tail of a tortoiseshell, but sharp bordered completely black and white and yellow patches from shoulders/hindquarters/mid belly down her legs.
Not much of a diva, though. More a friendly, klutzy, clown.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)been watered down by the mix! Torties are also divas, very picky...I feed ferals and a few of them are torties and they want nothing to do with the others and always pick fights if the other's food looks better! They're also very affectionate, but probably best ina one-cat household.
Ms. Toad
(34,074 posts)Someone dumped her at the vet, and my spouse wandered in at just the right time to be talked into a kitten. And then she wandered in at just the right time again a few weeks later when there was a black (probably part Siamese) rescue she begged us to take.
After a few days of spitting at each other, they are now (mostly) best buds. Anytime they are not tearing madly about the house gleefully chasing each other, doing mid-air chest bumps, or growling over the catnip fish (which the tricolor does jealously guard), they are happily sprawled on top of each other or grooming each other (without the grooming being a preliminary to a fight - which it often was with other cats).

(3,235 posts)babies and the dogs never treated the cat any differently than they treated each other. It was as if they didn't have a clue. When it was time to take a nap, all five would snuggle together in their little house/cave I had built for them and Mikey would groom all of the min pin's eyes and ears. The only thing the min pins never understood, was how come Mikey could jump on to things that they couldn't. I always knew when Mikey was up on a shelf or somewhere the min pins couldn't get to, as they would all go crazy barking until Mikey came down, or I told them "no"! Boy I miss those pets......Chloe, Rhett Butler, Ricky, Lucy, and Mikey......I know this didn't address your op, but that,s what popped into my head when I read your question. I guess most people just pick their pets by what they see in the pets personality and how they interact with each other when they meet. Also, there are probably way more of the various colored cats than there are black cats to choose from.

True story: My stupid, materialistic, moron ex found a cat, a grey one, and took it to the vet. He asked the vet what breed it was, then asked what it was "worth." The idiot actually had the cat appraised.
He named the cat "Blanche," after the Joan Crawford character in "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" "Blanche" means white, I believe. The cat was grey.

(188 posts)Not by choice though. My wife and I were at the local petsmart getting litter for the other two (a torty, who. is. insane. And a 1/2 manx cow kitty). We always step into the little kitty jail they have there to say hi. That evening somebody was in to clean the cages and let them have a strech. There was this cute little kitten on the floor, so I sat down to pet it. From the other side of the room this monster black cat walks over to me, jumps into my lap and looks at me just daring me to do anything about it. I looked over to my wife to see her rolling her eyes. she pretty much knew that we had a new cat.
But it was almost 3 weeks more before I brought him home. He had an abscess and an upper respiratory infection and ended up at the vet. I used this time to find out a little more about him. He had been turned into the shelter twice, and his last time had been for 18 months before I got him. Introducing him to the other two was fairly painless. Had a couple of sprays (including the xbox), but nothing since.
For all those people that walked by this cat beacuse he was black, or 7 years old, or 17 pounds, or possible medical issues down the road... Suckers. This cat is full of awesome. I know that 17 pounds is a little big to be a lap cat, but I can overlook it and he sure as hell doesn't seem to mind...

She's becoming more sociable despite her OCD (see post upthread) and I don't think she's ever really forgiven us for bringing the Dachshund into the house. She will "snuggle," but only in one spot on my couch, when I've settled down for the evening in front of the tv. (51 posts)First of all, black cats have a well known reputation for giving their owners bad luck. Also, cats of a darker color are harder to see at night, and are more likely to be run over by an oblivious motorist, which occurred to several of my dogs. Finally, I just like brighter colors more than darker ones. But to each his/her own.

(12,072 posts)Someone abandoned him and his sister at the truck stop where I worked at the time. I didn't learn about it until he had been there three days. One of the other employees took the girl home, I took him home. He was about eight weeks old at the time. He was affectionate from the start, although for the first two days all he did was eat, sleep, and fart (horrible ones). A good diet fixed the gas problem and after a couple of days rest he became a happy, playful kitten.
He is three years old now, neutered, a loving cat, still playful, and loves to act like he is a mighty hunting panther. He hasn't caught a bird yet, despite his best efforts. He but does catch and kill mice and rats. He doesn't eat them, just plays with them until they finally die. Then brings his trophy inside for us to appreciate.
Once he brought in a small, still live, snake, and put it at my wife's feet. She didn't appreciate the present.
At night, when he tires of hunting, he comes inside (He has his own entrance) walks on me to wake me up. He wants me to stick a arm out of the covers so he can curl up next to me for the rest of the night.
He loves whipped cream. Doesn't like milk or real cream, but gets very insistent that I put a little whipped cream in a bowl for him.
He has done quite a good job at training us what his signals mean.
We once had a beautiful calico that someone dumped out at our house. She was sweet, loving, and the smartest cat I have ever had. She meowed in sentences, with each meow having a different pronunciation. It was if she was trying to meow in words. She would look straight at one of us and start her meow sentence. My wife claims that she was eventually able to understand much of what the cat was saying. Here is a picture of her. Since gone to kitty heaven.

(3,370 posts)I have 5 of the little bastards. I was never a cat person, but I am a veterinary technician and have always treated them with love. A job hazard in the veterinary world is coming home with abandoned critters, usually with missing parts or some sob story. Got my first 9 years ago when an assistant brought in a box of day old kittens whose mom died. She asked, "you want to foster one?" I, having sworn I would never ever own a cat, immediately said sure and plucked up a grey tiger. I named him Duncan and swore up and down that I would only foster him until he was old enough for adoption. Ha! He's currently sitting at my feet, 9 years and 6 cats later.
Duncan is a grey tiger. I have a male tuxedo, Gawain. My Maine Coon, Amelia, is a Torbie. I have an orange Tiger named Seamus. And there is, Amber, my one-eyed 5lb Persian who rules the house. We had an orange Maine Coon, Abigael, who is in Heaven...she died when she was two. Each cat has their own very distinct personality. Each has a story to tell. All of my cats are super sweet and lovable. They are fantastic with my two young children. Out of all of them, it's the tuxedo and the orange boy who are the most laid back and easy going. I wuv my kitties.
In the veterinary world, there are anecdotes about the various colors. Calico and torties are cray cray. Torbies are slightly less cray. Tuxedos are laid back. Orange males, especially former toms with giant pumpkin heads, are the sweetest. Orange females are friendly enough, but won't hesitate to cut a bitch. But, truly, I have met total sweeties of all colors and complete assholes of all colors. Just like people. Also, completely anecdotal, it's said that black males and orange males are more likely to experience urinary blockages than any other colors.
I went from being a non cat person to someone who writes a novel about her kitties on a political message board.

(48 posts)Yet I have a cat!!
A beautiful black cat!
I prefer dogs and have several huge Leonbergers but while I ma not a cat person, I have had cats for about twenty years.
Until a few years ago, I was sans cat and decided I needed a small low maintenance beast. The local shelter had a bunch of cats, as usual. I really like short hair tabbies, but with a cat, I am more interested in personality and temperament.
The shelter rep, kind of a crazy cat lady, when I asked her to find me the cat, was interested in my thinking. She asked why I wanted her to pick the cat for me. Since I was interested in personality most, I knew she would have a better feel for the personalities of the cats there. You really can't understand a cat in a short visit!!
I was offered two cats, a classic tabby and a black cat. Pretty similar personalities...
The shelter lady explained that in this area black cats have difficulty finding homes. Since everything was equal in personality, why not a black cat?
This cat is spoiled, beautiful, and great. I never had any bias towards black cats, but I suggest that anyone looking for a cat give black cats a chance.

(13,421 posts)I've had every possible color combination over the years and I think that every cat has capacity for both insanity and brilliance.
The current overlord is a huge fat black (neutered) male that chose us 11 years ago when we were at the shelter looking to add to our family. He's robust, a distinct personality, and rules our lives. He treats me differently than he does my husband and our daughter--yet he clearly has an attachment to us all because he actually will wander from room to room looking for anybody that isn't home on a given evening. He's in my lap when I'm sitting or else in the same room with me unless I'm in the kitchen. When I cook he lays on top of his cat tree and watches me or else he naps. He's a Senior now, but he still will chase his tail sometimes, and he still loves his catnip mousies and his Fat Kitty "Kat Fud."
Before Chaucer came to us, we had Tillie(YouBitch) for 17 years. She was a rescue and one of the craziest most vicious cats I have ever known. She's be sweet and loving and then all at once she'd get "that look" in her eye and run across the room to attack. In all my years of living with cats I have NEVER seen anything like her. She terrorized any number of vets and vet techs over the years, and I hesitate to think how much blood that cat shed. I also never forgot the horrible early abuse she suffered at the hands of "humans" and I figured maybe she thought she was entitled to give some of that back. I loved her and miss her still.
I've lived with all white cats, gray tabbies, and gingers, and I will say that each one had a distinct personality and they gave more than they probably ever owed anybody.

(24,890 posts)ours (gray tabby) was dumped on my wife 14 years ago (happily), and before that, Oscar (another gray tabby) just showed up at the door-
We never had a "preference" in animal color-- the dog is white because she was found running down I-40. I guess we could dye her-- but, terriers are funny about stuff like that-
