"Democrat Recession"

I've been puzzled over the last few days about why, if the govt shutdown doesn't affect The Affordable Care Act, the republicans continue to keep federal services offline. I was thinking that this will only increase unemployment and possibly throw the country back into the Great Recession without putting so much as a dent in Obamacare, so why bother?

Then it occurred to me that instead of focusing on ending what the GOP sees as a socialist nightmare, this is about murdering an economy that has all the earmarks of recovery. I believe they plan to run future campaigns on the phrase "Democrat Recession" until those two words become forever linked in the minds of beleagured voters.

It seems desperate and vile, but with an ever shrinking base the republicans likely see this as their only hope to gain a majority in the senate and ultimately the White House in 2016. All they need to do is stall the recovery and plunge the country into the very depths of recession, then rinse and and repeat from the halls of hate radio and Fox News that this is "Obama's economy".

Will it work? Ask Jimmy Carter. By the time Reagan won the nomination, Carter's legacy was branded with a bad economy. Reagan was touted as the conservative cowboy who rode into the White House, and with a single tax cut, undid the damage done during a four year term by the Democratic president.

I'd like to think "the American people are smarter than that", but history proves we aren't.
