lets say things were reversed.
its president romney
majority leader mcconnel
the dems control the house with speaker pelosi
the dems pass a bill to fund the government but it includes mandatory background checks to buy a gun, something a majority of americans want.
the senate sends it back to the house but without the background checks.
speaker pelosi refuses to allow a vote on the bill causing a government shutdown.
would you support the shutdown?
of course teh teahaddists would shout about how unconstitutional and tyrannical the dems were being.....

They typically ignore that scenario and go back to bleating "Dems won't negotiate!"

(10,273 posts)is the key phrase in your hypothetical. If the Dem's had lost control of the Senate AND lost the White House on Background checks (after NO background checks had ALREADY been signed, settled, and Court Approved LAW for 2 years) then background checks for guns, quite clearly, are NOT what the "majority of Americans" want. AT ALL. And I'm fine with losing that argument and then still Co-Governing effectively.
I'm sorry, WHAT is it that the "Majority of Americans want" that the GOP is backing again?
Not a Damn Thing. This is piss-ant, "I didn't get my way and now I'm gonna have a cry about it because I'm a toddler.." bullshit.
Fuck them. Let them DROWN in this pool they filled.
Now, IF it were that Background Checks were a NEW, post-Romney victory issue, AND polls showed it were supported by 90% of Americans, then, MAYBE I would be in favor of using this tactic, and seeing if I could force McConnell to cut some kind of a deal. But he wouldn't do it, and as soon as I KNEW he wouldn't do it, I would probably relent because otherwise, I would bet that the wrath of the electorate would, eventually, redowned(sp?) to the Heads of the Democratic House members who wouldn't keep the Govt. open. And, I think they would be correct in that assessment.
