Health department advisory: Disease-causing sewage spills in Sanford [FL] water

A sewage spill has prompted a health department advisory for residents near the Smith Canal corridor to the St. Johns River near Sanford.

The spill occurred in canals and stormwater culverts in the area north of Andre Court west of Hickman Drive and west of Smith Canal to Interstate 4. How the spill happened and who is responsible was not explained in an alert from the Florida Department of Health on Saturday.

The spill may contain untreated human waste with microbes that could cause gastrointestinal and other diseases, the alert said.

"Until further information is known regarding this contamination, residents are urged to take precaution in these areas and avoid these waterways," said Dr. Swannie Jett, with the Seminole County Health Department.

Sanford came into the national spotlight last year after Trayvon Martin was killed there. So all I can say is: I hope George Zimmerman didn't hear this warning.
