I always thought NC; at least, some parts like Asheville- was/were borderline blue.

7. Asheville is blue. Chapel Hill (where I live), Durham are solid blue. Raleigh tends blue

and Charlotte usually is just barely blue.

The problem is that the Repubs who took over in 2010 gerrymandered districts.
Our House delegation went from being 7 Dems/6 Repubs to 9 Repubs/4 Dems
EVEN THOUGH there were more TOTAL VOTES FOR DEMS in House elections
than Repubs in 2012! Really a great demonstration of the effect
of gerrymandering.

And of course, for the first time in over 100 years, the state had both a solid
Repub legislature AND a Repub Governor.

It's going to take some work, but I am optimistic we can turn this around--
in no small part due to all the regressive legislation passed this session
and the backlash it has generated. I don't think the Repub shutdown
at the Fed level is going to help Repubs in the state, either.

15. So do I. North Carolina was stepping boldly out of the old south, but like Micheal Corleone,

has been pulled back in by rightwingers. Electing republicans is proving costly to North Carolina. The state is losing it's future and unless voters kick out republicans over the next two elections, the losses will be permanent.

4. Good job, Gary. Gee, he forgot 'No' to Medicaid expansion

leaving an estimated half million without health care coverage.

The decision not to expand hits hardest those who aren’t currently eligible but fall below the federal poverty level. This group is not able to receive subsidies to buy health coverage through the exchange, like those between 100 percent and 400 percent of the federal poverty level.“In the short run, it means hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians will remain uninsured, and they are not going to get adequate medical care,” said Jonathan Oberlander, a health policy professor at the UNC School of Medicine. “Research shows it makes significant health difference for people who get coverage. ... There is mounting evidence that it saves lives.”

10. Garry Trudeau's back only on Sundays, until daily comics resume on Nov. 18th.

In case anyone missed it, GBT has been on an extended hiatus from his Doonesbury comic strip, which provided the following info:

In early June, with Alex and Toggle on the brink of parenthood, GBT began an extended hiatus from Doonesbury in order to write a political sitcom called "Alpha House" (trailer here) . Flashback strips began running at that time. Although he'd hoped to return to the strip at the end of summer, just before Labor Day Trudeau wrote to subscribing newspaper editors saying he had "hit the wall," and realized that he couldn't complete the show while doing both daily and Sunday strips. Original Sundays resumed on September 8th (a week later Alex and Toggle's twins made their much-anticipated first appearance) but the dailies will continue in Flashback mode until Monday, November 18th.

I'm really sorry the dailies won't return until after next November's election.

12. "There's no business like NO business"
Sun Oct 6, 2013, 07:55 AM
Oct 2013

To the tune of "There's no business like show business" originally written in 2009, but still applicable:

There’s no business like NO business like no business I know
Blocking off Obama’s nominations, filibuster just around the bend
Freezing up some needed legislation, means will be justified by the end!

There’s no people like NO people, their truth standards are low
Even if you don’t like what Ann Coulter writes, or Beck puts up on his web sites,
Alito will still rule against your civil rights, so let’s go on with the NO!

McConnell, John Boehner, O’Reilly and Beck
Are secretly unhappy men because
McConnell, John Boehner, O’Reilly and Beck:
There’s only twelve per cent that likes their cause
They’d never bid their right wing base good bye for any true conservative, and why?

There’s no business like NO business and I tell you it’s so
Traveling through the country is so thrilling, going to Town Halls and starting fights
Smiling while you brawl and lose a filling, never losing your sleep at nights

There’s no people like NO people, their poll numbers are low
It is not a good idea if you talk back, ‘cause if you do, they will attack
Run if they come at you with a tire jack, ‘cause they go on with the NO.

(There’s no business like NO business like no business I know)
You get word before debate is finished, that your bill has been all watered down
All its impact has now been diminished, you’re broken-hearted, but you don’t frown

(There’s no business like NO business, as Dick Cheney will show)
Obama said he’d make our land a better place, old Dick said “that’s too in-your-face,
“So even if we never win another race, just let’s go on with the NO!”
