http://www.huffingtonpost.com/leo-w-gerard/congressional-republicans_b_4014217.htmlLike "Git 'er done," Americans should be yelling at Republicans in Congress: "Do yer job!" That's because Republicans are shirking their sworn duty by threatening to both shut down the government and default on its bills.
Before taking office, each member of Congress swears a simple, straightforward oath. It leaves little room for misinterpretation. They vow to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and to "faithfully discharge the duties of the office."
High among those duties is paying the government's bills. Just the threat of dodging that responsibility has serious consequences. Republicans' 2011 threat to default on government debts cost taxpayers $1.3 billion, according to the Government Accountability Office. Last week, as a government shutdown loomed, the stock market reeled, declining four straight days. The S&P 500 suffered its longest losing streak in a year. Republicans are hurting the economy. They're jeopardizing the recovery and American jobs. They're risking "full faith and credit" in the United States. They're not just failing to perform their jobs, they're doing the opposite of what they swore to do.

(1,190 posts)Without doubt the republicans have abdicated their Duty,So the question is at what point do they get impeached and tried for treason? And how does this get done? Who (officially) needs to take action besides we here on D.U. ? And whats the hold up?

(11,990 posts)The only way a House member loses his job is to be thrown out on a vote by other House members. Since they still have the majority, that won't happen.
And also AFAIK, violating an oath is not considered a criminal act. So there's no place here for law enforcement, either.

(6,407 posts)for breaking the law and betraying their oaths of office. . Their acts are also treasonous. Harming the economy is one of al Qaida's stated missions. They are aiding the enemy.
The only way to restrain these lunatics is to up the ante and threaten them with something significant. Otherwise, they push the boundaries further and further. The endless filibusters in the Senate so that only a 60 vote majority can do anything; the threats over a government shut-down and default, these were unheard of a few years ago. Although we had a government shut-down in the 90's thanks to Gingrich, the rest of this nonsense is very recent. Unless we can exercise a legitimate threat against them, they will keep pushing the boundaries. Elections barely register as a threat anymore, except from the conservative right in a primary, due to gerrymandering. It is time to up the ante rather than feeling powerless against the onslaught of the crazy.

(653 posts)Of....violating their oath of office.......of SEDITION and possibly TREASON. When their design and willful course for changing law is outside of the clearly defined constitutional path, they are GUILTY of SEDITION and TREASON.

(484 posts)President Obama as commander-in-chief of the armed forces should have the military shutter the house and senate, send the congress members back to their respective states and instruct the various state governors to immediately hold general elections to select new members of congress. Those that have abrogated their duties will not be eligible to return. Those that have violated their sworn duty will be prosecuted. I know it's far fetched, but a guy can dream.
