(25,699 posts)You know, a black man that they felt "served them."
No, what the Tea Party wants is exactly what Grover Norquist wanted - to drown the government in a bathtub. They have no idea what that means, they have no idea how to accomplish it, and they have no idea what the consequences will be. But they know that they hate government, and that's as far as their brains can go on the matter.
They might not know it themselves...but they support anarchy.

(2,347 posts)... armed with spears and pikes and all that, and yell FREEDOOMMM!!!!
Then fight. Of course, in their dreams they win and come out, like good ol' Mel Gibson, smeared in other people's blood, not their own.
Beyond that, they have no freakin clue.

(2,347 posts)They don't think more than one move ahead. If they did, this wouldn't be happening.

(3,539 posts)It would be the same people who fund the talking heads that fill republicans little brains with shouts of, lyberduy and freedum and sell them little yellow flags with snakes on them.
Heck, they'd want A Kama Sutra coffee pot and a baby's arm holding an apple if that was what fox news told them to want.

(611 posts)Purification, a big die-off event, the world as we know it torn down and rebuilt into their imagined paradise. The end of the world, to prompt the fulfillment of prophecy, religious or secular. To never have to know or care at all about people they don't like, and never be blamed or shamed for it. To finally end the ability of populations to rule themselves and hand all true power over to corporations and their primary owners. To never again have anyone tell them, "No." To have their worldviews and beliefs finally validated, by changing reality. Fame and fortune and respect. Absolute power. Absolute freedom.
I don't think they all want the same thing. A lot of them seem to have come from various RW movements which have been manipulated repeatedly by Republicans but never given what they were promised. They're angry, some of them are crazy, a lot of them aren't thinking ahead, most of them don't seem to care about consequences. They're beyond caring. They're beyond thinking, except to plot and justify their actions. They want short term gains, they want to make a statement.
Nine hells, I don't know what they want. I hope all my guesses are wrong, and there are human beings in there somewhere, who love their mothers and care about family and friends, who sometimes just want to cuddle a cat. Whatever is going on with them, they're in an extreme place and we should be trying to help calm them down rather than rile them up more and more, but our culture doesn't work that way.

(24,766 posts)South Carolina has, again, caught the nullification bug. As reported by The State, Republican lawmakers have proposed a bill that would allow the state attorney general to take a business to court if he has reasonable cause to believe that implementing the law would harm people.
Calhoun died in 185010 years before Lincoln won the presidency and sparked a rebellion among Southern statesbut his ideas motivated and inspired the secessionists.
Of course, the Civil War settled the broad question of national authority. But Calhouns core ideathat political minorities owed no allegiance to the decisions of majoritieslived on. It found refugee in the Southern wing of the Democratic Partythrough segregationists who opposed every effort to pass civil rights laws and end state-sponsored violence against African-Americansand eventually fused with conservative ideology in the 1960s and 70s as the center of gravity in the GOP moved from the West to the South.
