Based on breakthrough historical research and four years of on-the-ground reporting in disaster zones, The Shock Doctrine vividly shows how disaster capitalism -- the rapid-fire corporate re-engineering of societies still reeling from shock -- did not begin with September 11, 2001.
The films traces its origins back fifty years, to the University of Chicago under Milton Friedman, which produced many of the leading neo-conservative and neo-liberal thinkers whose influence is still profound in Washington today.
New, surprising connections are drawn between economic policy, shock and awe warfare and covert CIA-funded experiments in electroshock and sensory deprivation in the 1950s, research that helped write the torture manuals used today in Guantanamo Bay.
The Shock Doctrine follows the application of these ideas through our contemporary history, showing in riveting detail how well-known events of the recent past have been deliberate, active theatres for the shock doctrine, among them: Pinochet's coup in Chile in 1973, the Falklands War in 1982, the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989, the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Asian Financial crisis in 1997 and Hurricane Mitch in 1998.
Full documentary below - I thought it would be handy for DUers who haven't read / can't buy the book, and given several concurrent crises, important enough to put it in GD.

(5,379 posts)I just watched it again. It's no match for the book, but isn't that like it usually is with good books that your read before you see the movie ?

(84,711 posts)valid now with more folks than it was back then where it was just those of us who knew Bush stole election and were suffering under NAFTA which was taking it's toll after passing early in Clinton Administration.
Things are far worse in America these days that when Naomi fortold what we might be facing if we didn't act soon. We are now down years later with the "TransPacificPipeline (TPP) looming and an Austerity Budget in place for our citizens and those in the Euro-Zone.
Or...maybe the video production wasn't good enough to get eyeballs and reading her book is a better way of understand what she wrote about?

(2,921 posts)the book was brought up in a discussion and nearly everyone had read it, with the exception of myself and my friend whom I was visiting. One of my cousins mentioned it in a recent phone conversation last week as well. I've been meaning to pick up a copy, but other "stuff" has gotten in the way of spending money and time, along with reading enough excerpts and discussions here and elsewhere to deter the purchase. I'll get around to it this winter...
I do hope the video goes viral, since it puts faces and actual footage in context of what has been taking place. I always had an admiration for Gorbachev and now I know why. It's such a shame that Russia turned out this way. Disturbing.

(5,105 posts)I've heard of Friedman for years, never did much research on him. WHAT an ASSHOLE.
This needs to be shown worldwide. PNAC becomes more understandable--these people are fucking terrorists.

(5,379 posts)man, by John Perkins. It was flagged up by my (much less radical) economist brother, he's deeply cynical but was shocked none the less.
Here's an interview with John Perkins. Maybe you also find it insighful. You can skip the first 8 minutes if you're not concerned with how he ended up with his hit man job.

(84,711 posts)But...for CONTEXT..from the more History Minded DU'ers...the Whole Film is an excellent introduction to Opening Minds for "Connecting Dots" from what went on in your lifetime and before.
Truly...it's well worth the watch ...when one has time. Use the DU BOOKMARK or do it yourself to save to view on Weekend or whenever you can find time.

(5,379 posts)who unfortunately kind of missed out on history classes (I had a really, really bad teacher), the "beginnings" of the scheme are equally eye-opening. Allende and all that...
Thanks for the exposure kicks, Koko. It's so important people become aware of the pattern, so that we may become resistant to it.
