Tea Party Nation is taking back its endorsement of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in the Republican primary for McConnell's Senate seat.
Writing on the group's website on Wednesday, Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips referred to a report by Glenn Beck that described a closed door meeting in which McConnell said supporters of conservative groups FreedomWorks and Senate Conservatives Fund are traitors to the Republican Party. Those groups have criticized a number of top Republican lawmakers (including McConnell himself) over efforts to defund Obamacare.
"While endorsing Mitch McConnell seemed like the right thing to do at the time, Mitch McConnell has proven he is not worthy of conservative support," Phillips writes in the post, titled "Tea Party Nation withdraws endorsement of Mitch McConnell."
It is time to defund the GOP until the GOP pushes people like Mitch McConnell out of leadership. And if they do not, there are always alternatives for conservatives.
While the odds still favor Mitch McConnell being reelected to another term in the Senate, he will do so without our support.
Given his behavior, there is simply no reason for conservatives to support McConnell. Regrettably there are no good choices in Kentucky in this election.
In May, writing on McConnell's reelection website, Phillips endorsed McConnell over Republican Matt Bevin in the Republican primary.

(26,549 posts)And they're also the ones most likely to show up on primary day. Where he's being challenged by a teabagger.
How, exactly, does a teabagger organization withdrawing their endorsement help him win a primary against a teabagger?
Or did you forget about the primary election?
GreatCaesarsGhost
(8,585 posts)The KY republicans aren't going to vote the Senate minority leader out in the primary.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)Yes, he's currently ahead. But he's not so far ahead that he can assume he will win the primary.
And KY Democrats sure as hell would be happy to vote against him. So it's a really stupid general election strategy.

(8,585 posts)for the general election. the tea party is losing its power.

(12,608 posts)Mitch barely pulled out his race against Lunsford 6 years ago. That was pretty shocking since Kentucky has gone RED in presidential elections since Clinton. I kind of wonder if they aren't pulling their endorsement partly because Mitch is vulnerable and they don't want to be stuck supporting a guy who's currently behind in the polls a year out from the election. I don't discount the value of ideology, I just think that practical aspect of backing a potential loser played a part.
