Why are some of our Democratic Senators and House Reps freaking out? Why are some DU members freaking out?
First, the midterm elections are a YEAR away.
Second, the ACA WILL work.
By next spring, the current website problems will have long been resolved and the GOP won't have "Obamacare" as a talking point for the midterm elections.
And in the months that follow leading up to the midterms, the American people will be reminded once again of the GOP's regressive stances on a host of issues as the Republicans continue pissing off voters with their obstructive tactics and their war on the poor, the middle class, unions, women, African Americans, Latinos, and on and on.
So to all those who say ACA is unraveling ... no, only a few myopic Democrats are unraveling. And they should just chill out for the reasons I've listed above.
I wish someone like Rachel Maddow or Lawrence O'Donnell or Martin Bashir would address this reality and disabuse those worried Democrats -- in the Senate and House, and some here on DU -- of their unfounded fears.
(Whew, got that off my chest.)

(8,492 posts)I don't have to worry about any of that. I can't get insurance without the ACA, so a 'doctor/patient relationship' isn't anything I've had to concern myself with. The doctors in the ER don't seem terribly interested in building that relationship, either.
I have several customers that are doctors as well as two clinics. The two doctors I had time to discuss the ACA with were both very excited about it. One actually went off on another of my customers because the latter claimed it was going to destroy our 'great' healthcare system. Dr. Customer told him that his claim couldn't be further from the truth. That he was sick and tired of insurance companies telling him what he could do for his patients. That the ACA would ensure that his patients could be covered for preexistings and not have their coverage cut off after a 'lifetime cap'. He also mentioned that due to insurance, most of his patients wouldn't come in for well visits and would wait until they could no longer stand the pain and suffering they were going through. He moaned that it was often too late and their insurance wouldn't cover the catastrophic costs of late treatment.
That's the kind of doctor that is truly concerned with the 'doctor/patient' relationship. He didn't drive a Caddy, we laughed once about his lack of a yacht (inside joke about another local doc that had written a scathing LTE about Pres. Obama and the ACA). Oh, and his assistants adore him.
Good luck to you, doctor.

(17,199 posts)With all the negativity surrounding the website for the ACA, it certainly is gratifying to find a success story like Pittsburgh resident Gail Roach. The 57-year-old Pennsylvania woman with Type II diabetes had been paying $509 a month for her retirement healthcare premium from the Pittsburgh School Board. Instead of becoming discouraged over the bugs in the website, Roach was proactive and dialed the number listed on the website. She spoke with a specialist who walked her through the process and examined all of her options.
The policy she eventually selected was a reasonable $70 a month. But because she qualified for tax credits and the Cost Sharing Benefit, she now is only going to have to pay $1.11 a month.
Thats chump change, folks. And a whopping savings of $507.89 each month that she can now put in a savings account or spend as she chooses. Her deductible is only $26.50, with $20 co-pays. Without even knowing her annual income, its safe to say that this particular premium is incredibly affordable for almost any individual anywhere in America.
Im telling people they need to look into it. They need to be patient about it, said Roach. Go to the website. If you cant get on, call the number on the website and just be very patient because its very much worth it.

(37,428 posts)We should not underestimate the power of huge sums of money in the hands of the opponents of ACA and the president. They will find other weapons, and will no doubt be able to buy some success.
They probably won't be able to neuter ACA, but enough bad press will blunt its value in the next elections--their larger goal.

The biggest myth of the Obamacare debate goes like this: The failures of Obamacare prove that government can't be trusted to run our health care system. ... And it is wrong on every possible level. First of all, the premise is wrong. Obamacare cannot be a litmus test for government-run health care because Obamacare is not government-run health care. Obamacare creates an online exchange where people can buy private insurance. The government merely sets basic standards that every plan ...
The second problem with this myth is it's too SOON to judge Obamacare. All new software goes through a trial period. Back in 2005, the same thing happened when the Bush administration launched the website for Medicare Part D ...
The FOURTH problem with this myth is that OBAMACARE IS NOT A FAILURE. This week, the government announced that more than 500,000 Americans signed up for health insurance through Obamacare in its first month of operation.
You've probably heard that 106,185 people have signed up for health insurance through the new online exchange, but even more impressive is the 396,261 people who got their insurance through Medicaid or CHIP. In all the hubbub about HealthCare.gov, we seem to HAVE FORGOTTEN the Medicaid expansion under Obamacare, and the media hasn't bothered to remind us because ... well, it's going so SMOOTHLY.

(17,199 posts)Luke Russert just said on NOW With Alex Wagner that Democrats feel they've been sold out by Obama in the 2014 election.
Good grief! Give me a break!
(Thankfully Karen Finney said Democrats have to go back on the offense! That these websites glitches are NOT the demise of ACA.)
The midterms are a year away. The website will be fixed in the next few weeks and then everyone will move on as other issues, other scandals, other tragic events will consume the news cycles. (And many of these new stories will involve Republican obstructionism and Republican regressive policies.)
To quote Alex Wagner: "Nine months, ten months, is a lot of time to change the narrative."
In fact, the success of Obamacare next year will be a plus for us in November of 2014!
