WASHINGTON — Republicans on Capitol Hill were haunted this week by the comments of radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh as they struggled to refocus a debate over religious freedom and employer-provided insurance coverage of birth control.

The hyperbole-prone conservative slammed Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke last week after she testified in Congress in favor of contraception coverage, denouncing her as a "slut" and a "prostitute" who "wants to be paid to have sex."

Limbaugh even suggested that Fluke should post online videos of herself having sex in exchange for such insurance coverage.

The comments ignited a firestorm that has hurt GOP efforts to shift the debate away from birth control to religious liberty.
