Pixar lays off up to 5 percent on 'Dinosaur' delay

Story below.

We bought each of our 4 grand-kids one share of Disney stock (certificate) when it was announced they would no longer do printed shares: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1014616103

We are a huge Disney family. They certificates are beautiful and will provide a Disney dividend art check once a year for their lives, long after Marta and I are gone.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Disney subsidiary Pixar is laying off up to 5 percent of its 1,200 employees after it pushed back the release of "The Good Dinosaur" to November 2015 from next May.

That's according to a person familiar with the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the matter involved personnel.

The Walt Disney Co. (DIS) released a statement saying Pixar is always re-evaluating its creative and business needs.

Rhythm and Hues Studios - they got last years Oscar for Visual Effects on Life of Pi - had about the same number of employees.

If you follow the biz you might have read about how R&H went out of business two weeks after getting the Oscar. It's a combination of advantage taking by the big studios who hire them and tax incentives in Canada, Europe + cheap wages in Asia.

It's been like this for several years now, brutal layoffs and people living nomadic lives to stay in the business. What should have been the pride of California is now a bedraggled business that doesn't offer security to artists.

Forcing American artists to move overseas so foreign governments will subsidize their salaries up to 35 percent. Thanks New Zealand, Canada, UK, and China!
Those of us left (aka stuck) in LA get to scrap for the few freelance jobs left. Education, awards and experience don't mean much these days. Anyone can still find themselves with the rug ripped out from under there feet having to start all over. So bummed to hear about Pixar!

Think there are only 40 people left at R&H LA office.
