4 years ago.....About 20 miles east of Elko. Flipped her car. No weather, no drugs and alcohol, middle of the day, no reason. Most beautiful person I ever met.

Was going to SLC to take care of her Godkids, who's mother had been in a accident and was in the hospital...Just left everything. She worked Hospice and she said it was the most uplifting experience you could ahve. Said she wante her family (As she called them) to have the best time possible as they checked out.

Big Love to Missy Baron.

Yeah, we've seen Carrot Top here before he was a Vegas fixture. We laughed out asses off.
Can't hardly wait for P&T.
That is really good info on the buffet - I love double choices!
ANd I am extremely happy to hear about the Grand Canyon - I was just asking her if she knew how close Vegas was and I don't mind taking a day to go out and see that and the damn - especially since the glass walkway is there. I've seen pictures of that and been wanting to do that just about since it was built.
And you won;t ever hurt my feelings telling me about good BBQ.

We'll be meeting some friends out there so we won't be complete noobs (they've been several times and he is going to a conference for work so we are tying our trips together) but we will have some free time to do what we want too (I like going to touristy places and doing touristy things and they are probably over all that stuff now lol. Heck, I live in Orlando and still love to go to Disney and the other theme parks.)....

anyway - super stoked for this. It makes me not miss going to the Maryland Death Fest this year so bad...(I've been the last three years).

i am over here near cocoa beach
its a good long day doing the dam and the canyon but there are other things too
you drive into arizona and there will be dust devils by the dozens road runners and rabbits 3 feet tall
you have to drive there on a rough road so take a vehicle with clearance
the bbq is near the guano mine at the canyon
the guano mine is closed but ask them about it and you will hear a story about what folks will do if they only have one resource
walking out on that glass sounds easy til you take that first step it is freakishly scary

I live here now but grew up in Dallas. But we came here on vacations when I was little - my grandparents took me to Disney when I was 7 and it had only been open a year or two. Loved it ever since.

I plan to give my DSLR camera a serious workout out there. I'm photo-hunting wabbits. Apparently scary giant ones.

one of my favorite places on earth. My great-grandfather homesteaded there, my grandfather and father and countless cousins were raised there. I vacationed there often as a child.

Great Basin National Park is basically the back yard of a tiny town with 50 people or so. When I retire, I would love to rehab my grandparent's ranch and have a B&B. Perhaps when I win the lottery.

Sagebrush and pinon pine always says "home" to me.

ETA: I was born in Reno. And I LOATHE Vegas, as do all the folks in White Pine Co.

I guess it's fine to visit, though it's nothing like the bargain it was 30 years ago. Corporate Vegas is all about the Benjamins, baby.

But trust me, this is a shithole to live in. No jobs, very few services and horrible infrastructure with empty houses all over the place.

Think an aspiring Detroit in the desert.

Plus, when I lived in Utah for about six months in 2005, it was soooo nice to get to Wendover, where you could practically taste freedom! I remember going to a Smith's market, and seeing plastic bottles of vodka piled up on a display like they were oranges in a produce department.

It was truly an oasis in the desert!

I just find Vegas the most ridiculous place on Earth. I drove my mother and aunt (and her two GREAT-grandkids) to Vegas from Kansas to try and get her worthless grandson to take responsibility for them. Fortunately, I didn't have to deal with them once there. Mom likes to play the slots every now and then so she was set. I did enjoy the Penn and Teller Show and the Star Trek Experience, but I left them for a week to fly to Seattle to visit a friend and her husband (who suggested I walk the strip at 2 in the morning and listen to marriages breaking up over how much money one of the spouses lost). I remember looking out the window of the plane as it taxied and turned.. desert, desert, desert, black pyramid, sphinx, big pink building, desert, desert, desert... Other than the two shows I did go down to the hotel casino one night just to watch and couldn't understand the allure. The nicest experience I had was walking through the parking garage of the hotel one morning and meeting a casino waitress coming off her shift. She was one of the most attractive (and buxom) women I've ever seen, and she gave me a very sweet, "Good morning." Probably had a good night of tips from the high rollers.

On the way to check out, we walked through the casino and Mom put a coin in one more slot machine and won us enough gas money for the trip home.

Overall it was a good trip because of Seattle and Vancouver and because I got to try Tim Horton donuts for the first (and only) time. Damn good donuts.

My favorites -

Mandalay Bay - love the Asian/Russian themes and the three story wine rack with girls on pulleys.
MGM - movie themes, 20's theme, classy
Ceasars Palace - Rome themes, shopping is the best
Alladin - cheap rooms for first class and new - people forget about it

Reno 74,

I met this guy about 5 months ago and he told me had this poster. Not a Deadhead or very hip, but he knows I am into posters and the Dead... He bugs the shit out of me about it for a couple of weeks but he is describing it as just another fan drawing and I kind of am not into it.

Then one day he bring s it over. HOLY CRAP! I remember the poster too well. It used to be one of the posters of the era that you could get everywhere.

He gave it to me. THE ORIGINAL pen and ink. this poster was famous for a while. used to be one of the GD posters you would find at headshops etc and on some shirts...

The story goes that the artist went to the Reno show having never seen the Dead before , Had his mind blown, and went home in Sacramento that night and drew this from memory. It is really incredible. Danny said he got it recovering a dope debt back in the late 70's..

It is huge. 3 feet by four feet. Beat to shit cuz the guy kept it horribly. water marked etc. I don't know what to do with it, but I enjoy telling the story about the poster and that Reno show..

They had a lot of silver mines in Nevada.
I think that is where the Ponderosa ranch in the Bonanza tv series was located.

Reno is a great town, Las Vegas is a great town.
The people are pretty friendly, especially when they find out that you're not moving there.

LoL

Winnemuca and Elko are good towns, been there many times, too.

gives you a gorgeous view of Sparks and Carson City lights. I spend alot of time in Reno/Lake Tahoe area, only about 2 hours from me and although I don't gamble, it's always fun to visit the area. Hate the desert but if I had to, I could live in the Reno Area. was married in Douglass county,(South Lake Tahoe) so it holds a warm spot in my heart.

I've been to Vegas many times and find it stimulating. Went to Laughlin to get married (ended up going to Bullhead City for the "ceremony&quot and have been to Reno multiple times and Tahoe a few times. Once, my brother and I drove all the way from Eugene, Oregon to Vegas and back (straight through both ways). Beautiful, but desolate country. Hit a snow storm in the mountains near the Northern California border on the trip home with many, many hours already behind the wheel. It was surreal and hypnotic, then I saw a small pack of wolves crossing the road in front of me--they were like ghosts. It was a great trip.
I try and get to Reno at least once every couple years--I'd go more but I'm just not lucky enough when I do.

in every sense of the word.

Right to work State with shit wages.
Vegas is an obscene waste of water and energy resources.
Insanely rightwing outside of LV.
Happily devoid of culture.
Gun fixated and paranoid.

I have spend a lot of time in Nevada -- in the real Nevada, outside of Vegas and Reno. It isn't pretty, in any sense of the word. Wait, the landscape is actually lovely for around 10 minutes when the sun is setting in the summer -- the dessert hills turn lavender -- but it doesn't make up for the other 23 hours and 50 minutes when it is a barren moonscape.

yes, we have some ron paul bumper stickers and we've got our teabaggers; however, we've also got some great democrats here. One of the strongest unions is the culinary union, and now they've started ad campaigns against that union. Also, we have strong IBEW, plumbers unions here.

My FIL would agree that las vegas was friendlier, if you can believe it, when the mob ruled the town. He told a story how, after getting off of work riding up on the elevator at one of the casinos with one of the big wigs. The guy asked him if he was enjoying himself and if he needed anything just let him know. My FIL was a laborer and he said he made him feel that he was as important as a high roller. He also talked about if a person lost their shirt in the casinos, management usually gave the loser a ticket home. The corporates seem to only care about the high rollers now. Also my hubby's grandfather was a golf greens keeper in vegas and had met the rat pack. When dean martin would play, he'd ask his grandfather for some chew.

Got some great shows in vegas and now they've opened the smith center. my SIL just gave me as a birthday present a ticket to see the celtic women show-they're coming april 29th to the smith center.

My cousin is a nevada historian, has been on PBS and in documentaries about the dam. He knows a lot about hoover dam, lake mead history and about old vegas.
