(230 posts)But he didn't.
Much of the stories generated by these leaks have been about spying on foreign countries, which I always suspected and supported. It doesn't violate our 4th Amendment and should have never been disclosed. The most important commodity to intelligence agencies and intelligence gathering is secrecy.
I'm not so concerned about the collection of data as I am about how that data is used and accessed. Any reforms should keep the gathering in place, but strengthen areas of weakness that would allow for abuse of power.
There's a potential for abuse of power in every area of government, but does that mean we should advocate drowning it in a bathtub? HELL NO. People calling for nothing less than the dismantling of the NSA/CIA can't be taken any more seriously than folks that are perfectly fine with these agencies as-is.
Snowden did start the conversation. We can't deny that. But the conversation is more important than the man. He will always be a criminal that betrayed his country, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have the conversation and implement necessary reforms.
